Longyuan Power's Alxa Wind/Solar-to-Hydrogen Project

The Longyuan Power Green Hydrogen Project is a 600 MW project located in Alxa Left Banner of Alxa League, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China. In addition to 600 MW, it is powered by 400 MW wind power and 200 MW solar PV to produce clean energy.

It is launched by the Inner Mongolia branch of China Longyuan Power Group Co Ltd. (a subsidiary of CHN Energy). It is the first green hydrogen project launched by CHN Energy as a part of China’s 5 year green hydrogen plan. It is a wind-solar integrated hydrogen & green ammonia low carbon hydrogen park.

On its commission in 2025 (expected), it will generate 1.54 kWh of green electricity and 140,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This renewable hydrogen plant will save about 45,600 tons of coal and reduce 88,300 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Jingneng Power Inner Mongolia Green Hydrogen Project

The Jingneng Power Inner Mongolia green hydrogen project began construction in August 2020 and was commissioned in 2023. It is near Shaanxi & Ningxia region, Inner Mongolia, Northern China.

The green hydrogen plant is developed as a solar & wind integrated plant with 1.85 GW solar energy and 370 MW wind energy. It was built by a Chinese state-owned utility, Beijing Jingneng. 

The green hydrogen plant will produce 66,900 tons of hydrogen annually. It is built at a project cost of CNY 24.1 Billion (USD 3.3 Billion). This cost breakdown includes utility resources such as a natural gas pipeline, an agricultural logistics center, an industrial steam facility, and a quartz sand processing plant.

Xinjiang Green Hydrogen Plant

The Xinjiang Green Hydrogen Plant is a 260 MW plant that replaced Ningxia Baofeng Energy green hydrogen plant as China’s largest green hydrogen plant in 2023. The hydrogen plant is powered by an additional 300 MW of on-site solar and wind power that will produce renewable green hydrogen. 

The green hydrogen plant was developed by Sinopec, producing 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. About 48.8% of green hydrogen produced is used to meet the country's renewable energy demand. The remaining 0.5% of green hydrogen is transported to Sinopec Oil refinery using a pipeline.

Ningxia Baofeng Energy

The Ningxia Baofeng Energy is a 150 MW project with green hydrogen production of 27,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. It was developed by the Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group. It was known as China’s largest green hydrogen plant at the time of commission in 2021.

It is located in the autonomous region of Ningxia in central China. An additional 200 MW solar array powers the 150 MW electrolyzer plant. The clean hydrogen produced in this plant is known to be sold at USD 1.0/kg, which is low compared to the price of coal-gasification based hydrogen, says IEF (International Energy Forum).

China Huadian Corporation Green Hydrogen Project (CHC)

The China Huadian Corporation green hydrogen project is located in the Baotou region, in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous region. It is known as the region’s first wind-solar energy hydrogen project. The green hydrogen plant produces 7,00 metric tons of renewable-based hydrogen annually using a 200,000 kW PEM electrolyzer. 

It is powered by 120,000 kw of wind power, 80,000 kw of solar PV, and 20,000 kw of electrochemical storage. It was commissioned in 2023. It will reduce 430,000 tons of carbon emissions, 60 tons sulphur dioxide, and 84 tons of oxynitride annually. The renewable hydrogen production annually can fuel 1,000 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks.

China’s Green Hydrogen Industry Development Plan (2021-2035)

China’s green hydrogen plan targets two tangible goals for the hydrogen industry 2025; this includes achieving a target of 50,000 fuel cell vehicles and fuel cell vehicle filling stations. The second tangible target is to achieve a renewable hydrogen production capacity between 100,000 and 200,000 tons annually. 

Chinese government further laid down several long-term development plans for the hydroge industry, that includes use of clean hydrogen in sectors like energy storage. Currently, China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of hydrogen. Additionally, it is world leader in electrolysis & owns large electrolyzer like Baofeng, Shell and HyPower.
