The Biden-Harris Administration has unveiled an ambitious initiative to construct 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. The motif of the project is to create a reliable, convenient, and domestically produced EV charging network.
The initiative will include the issuance of minimum guidelines for federally financed EV infrastructure and the finalization of the Build America - Buy America strategy for EV charging equipment. According to the announcement by the government municipalities, towns, tribes, and states will soon be able to compete for the first USD 2.5 billion in grants to construct EV charging stations throughout the country. Together, these measures are set to electrify the quintessential American road trip.
The initiative is part of the flagship projects announced under 'The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law' of President Biden that includes channeling investments of USD 7.5 billion into EV charging, USD 10 billion into clean transportation, and more than USD 7 billion into EV battery components, essential minerals, and materials.
As per a fact sheet released by the White House, the Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Department of Energy, has concluded new regulations to provide all Americans, even those traveling long distances, with convenient and reliable EV charging access. These fresh standards will ensure that the charging network is open to all. Additionally, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has released its ultimate strategy for abiding by the Build America, Buy America Act when it comes to federally subsidized EV chargers. As of now, all EV chargers supported through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law must be domestically manufactured in the US.
