German energy giant RWE has significantly expanded its battery energy storage presence in the United States with the completion of three new projects totaling 190 megawatts (MW). These new battery energy storage systems (BESS), named Bright Arrow, Big Star, and Mesquite 4, bring RWE's total US battery storage capacity to a whopping 512 MW.
Bright Arrow, the largest of the three, sits in Texas with a 100 MW battery and a 300 MW solar array. Big Star, also in Texas, pairs an 80 MW battery with a 200 MW solar farm. Finally, Mesquite 4 in Arizona features a 10 MW battery alongside a 52.5 MW solar project.
This move aligns with their "Growing Green Strategy" and positions them as a major player in the clean energy transition. All three projects are paired with solar power plants, allowing them to store excess clean energy generated during peak sunlight hours and release it back onto the grid when needed. Additionally, they have an impressive 770 MW of BESS currently under construction. To further learn about the upcoming expansion, please refer to our US Battery Energy Storage project database.
RWE's commitment to battery storage extends beyond the U.S. They also have projects underway in Europe and Australia, with a global battery storage capacity of around 700 MW and over 1 GW under construction. This demonstrates their dedication to becoming a leading player in the global battery storage market.
