About the OEE Calculator

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity.

It captures availability (uptime), performance (speed), and quality (first-pass yield).

Formula

            OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

A
— Availability — (Operating Time / Planned Production Time)
P
— Performance — (Actual Output / Theoretical Output)
Q
— Quality — (Good Units / Total Output)

How to use this calculator

  1. 1

    Enter planned production time

    Total time scheduled for production.

  2. 2

    Enter operating time

Actual time the equipment was running.

  3. 3

    Enter theoretical output

    Output at maximum speed.

  4. 4

    Enter actual output

    Total units produced.

  5. 5

    Enter good units

    Units that meet quality standards.

Example calculations

Manufacturing line OEE

A line has 480 minutes planned, 400 minutes running, theoretical output 200 units, actual output 180 units, 160 good units.

Availability = 400/480 = 83.3%. Performance = 180/200 = 90%. Quality = 160/180 = 88.9%. OEE = 83.3% × 90% × 88.9% = 66.7%.

Availability:
83.3%
Performance:
90.0%
Quality:
88.9%
OEE:
66.7%

OEE of 66.7% — below the 85% world-class standard. Focus on quality and availability.

Interpreting your results

OEE of 85% is considered world-class. Most manufacturing operations run at 60-70%.

The lowest of the three factors is the biggest opportunity for improvement.

Industry applications

Business

  • Performance measurement: track manufacturing productivity.
  • Continuous improvement: identify and prioritize improvement areas.
  • Benchmarking: compare across plants and industries.

Construction

  • Equipment utilization: measure heavy equipment effectiveness.
  • Concrete plants: track batching plant OEE.

Research

  • Industrial studies: benchmark manufacturing performance.
  • Productivity research: analyze OEE drivers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✗ Missing the quality component

OEE includes quality. Ignoring quality overstates productivity.

  • ✗ Using theoretical maximum speed

Use realistic theoretical speed, not the absolute maximum.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good OEE score?

85% is world-class. 60-70% is typical for many manufacturing operations.

How do I improve OEE?

Focus on the lowest factor. Improve availability, performance, or quality.
