Example calculations

Assembly line throughput

An assembly line produced 2,400 units in 3 shifts (24 hours) with step times: 0.5, 0.8, 0.6, and 1.2 min/unit.

Throughput = 2,400 / 24 = 100 units/hour. Bottleneck = Step 4 (1.2 min/unit).

The line runs at 100 units/hour but the bottleneck limits it to 50 units/hour.
