Overview
On 9th September 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed by India, the European Union (EU), Germany, Italy, France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the G20 summit which was held under the presidency of India. Under this, the countries committed to work together to establish the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor.

IMEC compromises railway lines, sea lines, and road networks. Participants believe that the corridor will result in an improvement in efficiency, a reduction in prices, an enhancement of economic unity, the generation of jobs, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which will lead to a transformative integration of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Project Scope
The aim of this corridor upon completion is to have a dependable and reasonably priced cross-border rail network that will be enhanced by the availability of road and marine transportation options. Such a transport network will enable the flow of products and services between India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Greece, and Italy, France, and Germany.
IMEC route consists of two corridors;
- Eastern Corridor: This Corridor will connect India to the Arabian Gulf
- Northern Corridor: This Corridor will connect the Arabian Gulf to Europe
In addition to the corridor, the countries will also lay the network of the electricity grid. For the digital connectivity, optical fibre cables will be laid and for the transportation of hydrogen gas, pipelines will be installed.
Important components
There are three main components of India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor;
The first part of this strategy is to increase economic growth by enhancing the conveyance of energy resources via energy grids and expanding online interactions via undersea/submarine cables. These will both contribute to the growth of the digital economy.
The second part of the strategy is to reduce the disparity in infrastructure gaps between low-income and middle-income countries.
The third part of this strategy is to enhance the safety of the surrounding area by working together on infrastructure projects.
In addition to the fulfillment of these three key elements, the signatory countries also promised to combine efforts to connect and develop maritime, road, and rail networks. The IMEC will be supported by the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) which is an initiative led by the US to fix up the infrastructure gap for developing countries.

Besides economic development, every country associated with this corridor has its own interests which are diverse and are focused on meeting their national interests. The interests of various countries are;
Through the implementation of this project, the United States is looking for ways to present itself as a substitute partner and investor in rapidly expanding economies in Asia and Africa.
The European nations, notably Germany, France, and Italy, have the objective of bolstering their geoeconomic dominance in the Gulf region and in India.
The economies of the Gulf states, particularly those of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, are becoming increasingly focused on expanding their national bases of production and broadening their economic foundations away from oil and toward renewable energy sources.
Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi ji identifies this IMEC project, which is being carried out as a secondary route that provides economic and infrastructure connections with West Asia and Europe.

Obstacle to China's BRI
This IMEC initiative is being viewed as a potential competitor to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Eurasian region and also serves as a counterbalance to China's growing influence.
Arabian Peninsula Engagement
Through this project, India plans to deepen its strategic engagement with the Arabian Peninsula by forging a connection that will last and strengthening the political and strategic ties with the countries that are in the region.
Enhanced Connectivity
With the help of this corridor, there will be a 40 percent and 30 percent reduction, respectively, in the amount of time as well as the cost required to carry goods from India to Europe.
Increased Industrial Growth
The aim of the corridor is to create an effective transportation system for the movement of goods. The countries associated with this will see increasing industrial growth as it will be easier for them to transport the raw materials and also the finished products.
Creation of Employment
Due to the improved connectivity, the economic activities will expand and there will surely be a rise in job opportunities. The growth in various sectors will need more skilled and unskilled workers.
Challenges to India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor
Economic Integration Challenges
It is estimated that construction of each of the routes of India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) will cost between USD 3 billion to USD 8 billion. Securing such a huge amount is a significant challenge.
Opposing Challenges
IMEC will face strong opposition or competition from the existing routes such as Egypt's Suez Canal as it will reduce the traffic and revenue which will cause diplomatic hurdles.
Challenging of Planning
IMEC is a multimodal corridor of transportation that involves road, railways, and sea links that will span through multiple countries and thus will require complex planning and coordination.

Many Different countries are involved in this corridor that possess different interests and choices, administrative procedures and legal systems which can pose a challenging situation for IMEC.
Conclusion
It is anticipated that the IMEC will foster economic growth by improving connectivity and facilitating financial integration among Asia's western and southern regions and Europe. By ensuring that Asia and Europe are connected via multiple modes of transportation, the IMEC is, in a sense, bringing back the ancient spice route.
Deeply interconnected connectivity is still one of India's top priorities, and the country's IMEC aims to help it establish links from the Indian Ocean to the waters of the Arabian Sea, and then from the Arabian Sea to the Mediterranean Ocean via a land route in the West Asian region.
