Project Background

By constructing a six-lane expressway between Patna and Purnia in Bihar, India, the Patna-Purnia expressway project will reduce travel time and boost regional development. Originally 250 km long, the expressway extended to 282 km, making the total length of the expressway to 282 km. The project includes 21 big bridges, 140 portable bridges, 11 railway overbridges, 21 interchanges, and 32 interpasses.

Project Details

A new agreement has been finalized for the Patna-Purnia Sixlane Expressway. The total length of the expressway is 282 km. It will start from Dighwara in Sarana and end in Dagarua in Purnia.

Madhepura JD(U) MP Dinesh Chandra Yadav said that the expressway will be a bonus for the Kosi and Seemanchal people as the vast stretch of the road will pass through these two regions, connecting rural and riparian areas.

On completion, it will be one of Bihar's most remarkable infrastructure projects. Vijay Sihna, Deputy Chief Minister, confirmed that the state government’s request will be taken into consideration. Thus, an additional spur will be built to connect Samastipur, Saharsa, and Madhepura.

Patna Purnia Expressway Investors

The primary funding source for the six-lane expressway is the Government of India. The 2024 Union Budget shows that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an investment of INR 26,000 for expressways development projects in Bihar. The investment includes the Patna Purnia expressway, too.

Benefits

The Patna Purnia Expressway will prove to be a milestone for Bihar. It's part of the larger plan to improve Bihar’s roads. The infrastructure development will ensure a reduced travel time. Along with that, it will improve connectivity and foster economic growth. Once ready, it will boost trade, tourism and investment in the state.

Reduced Time Travel

  • Fewer stops and blocks: Less intersections and sharp turns make travel easier and quicker.
  • High-speed design: The roads have a 120km/hr speed limit. Thus, reducing travel time by allowing vehicles to move evenly at a consistent speed.

Improved connectivity

  • Enter the underdeveloped areas: The connection to the Kosi and Seemanchal regions will provide opportunities for economic growth and infrastructural development.
  • District blend: It passes through seven districts -  Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Saharsa, and Madhepura, tying them together for better interlinkage.

Drastic transformation in the regions this expressway passes

  • Trade and logistics boost: The regions like Kosi and Seemanchal are underdeveloped. On completion of the expressway, these regions will gain faster access to Patna’s markets. As a result, it will enable quick transfer of perishable goods.
  • Urbanization: Towns like Bidupur, Patepur, and Dagarua are foreseeable to grow into urban centres as people migrate for jobs and services.
  • Easy access to Healthcare and Education: Natives of hinterland areas like Madepura and Darbhanga will be able to reach Patna in a shorter time. Thus, making it easy for them to access healthcare facilities and education effortlessly.
  • Pollution Trade-off: The expressway might increase traffic in the regions. Along with that, it increases noise and air pollution. Yet, modern design elements like protective fencing and potential green initiatives might mitigate this.

Other benefits

  • Improved connectivity: The improved connectivity will attract more commercial and residential real estate investments.
  • Infrastructure in investments: The government allocates INR 26000 crore for infrastructure development in Bihar. Such investments lead to real estate development as infrastructure attracts developers and buyers.
  • Urbanization: Urbanization leads to the development of new townships and housing projects. It diversifies real estate options and serves a larger scope of buyers and investors.

Land near the expressway could see a rise in prices: Property values near infrastructure projects see a vast jump in prices. Property owners and investors near the expressway may expect significant returns.

Conclusion

The Patna Purnia Expressway is a six-lane 90-meter wide expressway that connects Patna to Purnia. At the start, the expressway was 250 km, but with an extra 32km, the total length of the expressway is now 282 km. It will start from Dighwara and end in Dagarua in Purnia. The expressway will enjoy a speed of 120km/hr.

It crosses through the prime seven districts - Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Saharsa, and Madhepura. It will cut across NH-322, between Sarangpur and Sarairanjan. Additionally, it will connect NH-527 between Rosara and Jahangirpur. The total estimated cost for the expressway is INR 18,042 Crores. The construction is to start by June 2025.

The Patna - Purnia Greenfield Expressway will be beneficial in tremendous ways. Once the expressway is built, it will reduce travel time from six hours to three hours. It will improve road connectivity and bring urbanization, thus, leading to the development of new townships and housing projects. It benefits the landholders, as it will witness land appreciation.  There would be a drastic change in the regions where the expressway will pass. People of the Kosi and Seemanchal regions will get quick access to the Patna market. They can easily approach healthcare and education facilities.
