Project Scope
The main developer of this project is the government of Tamil Nadu and the assistance for this project is being provided by GH2 Green Hydrogen Organization. They will facilitate the design of green hydrogen projects in a regional hub and provide co-location services to businesses in the area, allowing them to network, receive assistance with site acquisition, secure approvals for foreign investment, and promote investment. They will also set a specific goal for the state's annual green hydrogen/ammonia output.
The project aims for an annual green hydrogen/ammonia output exceeding 5 MMT, with the state already securing deals for 2 MMT. The hub encompasses the establishment of comprehensive green hydrogen infrastructure, including production facilities, storage units, and robust distribution networks.
An Expression of Interest (EoI) was requested by the government, and the private sector has shown an enormous amount of interest in making investments in the sector. A significant number of businesses have indicated that they are enthusiastic about the establishment of green hydrogen hubs in Kandla and Tuticorin. There are more than 20 participants who have shown interest in developing their projects in the state, and among them are some of the most well-known figures in the world.
Location Details
The green hydrogen hub will be located in Tamil Nadu. The businesses have selected two locations namely, Kandla and Tuticorin to set up their projects.
There are a number of specific advantages that Tamil Nadu possesses, one of which is that it is a coastal state. In addition, it has access to renewable energy sources, the size of the grid within the state, and it has a very big connectivity with the rest of the country.
Investments

An investment of more than INR 6,000 crores would be necessary to establish a transshipment hub at the port in south Tamil Nadu, which is also being evaluated as a prospective facility for such a hub.
According to the sources, the investment being made by the three businesses (Acme, Petronas, and Hygenco) has the potential to bring in a total of INR 1 lakh crore in green hydrogen as a result of their combined efforts.
Interested Businesses
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) in order to establish a green hydrogen hub in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
ACME Group signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government in order to set up a green hydrogen and green ammonia project in the State. There will be a solar photovoltaic plant with 5,000 MW, an electrolyzer with 1.5 GW, and an ammonia synthesis loop with 1.1 million metric tons of output.
Petronas, and Hygenco are two other corporations that have taken the initiative to express their desire to establish their units in the state.
