Project Background

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister gave notice in April 2006 that it supported the idea of re-establishing the connection between Bedford and Oxford.

In April of 2008, the Department for Transport provided a response to an electronic appeal requesting assistance with the East-West Rail Line project by restating that they were going to encourage private investment.

During the 2011 Autumn Statement, which was made by Chancellor George Osborne, information regarding the East-West railway between Oxford, Aylesbury Vale Parkway, and Bedford was accepted by the Department for Transportation, and a total of 270 million pounds sterling was allocated to the proposal in order to support the establishment of the railway.

This was put in place after the Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening, made the announcement in July 2012 that the Western segment of the East-West Rail Line would be incorporated into the overall plan that the nation's government has for the future of rail transportation.
