Zenobē has announced the acquisition of a 400 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at Low Harker in Cumbria, northwest England. The project, previously developed by Innova, is described as a ready-to-build system that represents a strategic move toward the UK's target of reaching 25 GW of installed energy storage capacity by 2030.
The battery storage system is scheduled for connection in 2028. This acquisition aligns with the UK's broader plan to achieve 25 GW of installed energy storage capacity by 2030.
Strategic Location and Technical Capabilities
The chosen location at Low Harker is positioned close to the Harker substation, which is identified as key to improving energy flow and solving location constraints. The British government's decision to maintain the national electricity pricing structure facilitated this operation, as it favors investments such as this battery storage project.
The site will be capable of offering inertial and reactive power, which is particularly relevant following the closure of plants such as Heysham nuclear. Zenobē plans to apply its expertise in grid inverters at this location, similar to what it has demonstrated at Blackhillock. This capability will enable the company to participate in diversified energy services that strengthen the grid and reduce wasted renewable energy.
Community Benefits and Social Impact
In line with Innova's community promise, a social benefits program will be implemented as part of the project. This program includes collaboration with parish councils and organizations such as The Country Trust. The investment will be utilized to enhance local well-being throughout the project's lifespan.

Portfolio Expansion and Company Growth
With this acquisition, Zenobē adds to its existing portfolio, which already includes 1.2 GW in operation or under construction. The company maintains its strategy of operating transmission-connected assets. This acquisition follows Zenobē's recent addition of 1 GW at Butlers Wood, reaffirming its role in the transition to a decarbonized grid.
Semih Oztreves, global head of grid infrastructure at Zenobē, noted that this site represents a decisive step towards accelerating the UK's flexible energy infrastructure without recourse to state subsidies. Daniel Mushin and Jon Sheppard, principals of Innova, noted that the development of the site demonstrates the potential for collaboration to drive resilient energy solutions nationwide.
The acquisition represents part of Zenobē's continued expansion in the battery energy storage sector, contributing to the UK's broader energy storage infrastructure development goals. The project's positioning near existing grid infrastructure and its technical capabilities for providing grid services highlight the strategic nature of the investment in supporting the country's energy transition objectives.
