Singapore's YTL PowerSeraya has signed an agreement with Malaysia's BAC Renewable Energy (BACRE) to supply bio-LNG, marking the first physical bio-LNG deal in Asia. The companies confirmed the agreement on November 4, with the bio-LNG being described as a clean fuel derived from organic waste.
Groundbreaking Regional Agreement
“This agreement is the first of its kind for a physical bio-LNG supply in Asia,” said Norzaifizy Khalid Nordin, BACRE's Business Development Director. The deal represents a significant milestone in the region's renewable energy sector, establishing a new precedent for bio-LNG supply arrangements across Southeast Asia.
This agreement is the first to be finalized under a new Singaporean government program that was launched on October 27. The program is designed to test the import of biomethane for power generation and industrial use, indicating Singapore's strategic approach to incorporating renewable gases into its energy infrastructure.
Supply Chain and Production Responsibilities
Under the terms of the deal, the Malaysian company BAC Renewable Energy will be responsible for producing and gathering bio-LNG from across Southeast Asia. BACRE will also handle setting up the necessary supply chain infrastructure to deliver the bio-LNG to Singapore.
BACRE is actively advancing renewable gas projects in Malaysia and neighboring countries. The company has plans to build small-scale processing plants throughout the region to support its bio-LNG production and supply operations.
The company also intends to hire a specialized ship to transport the bio-LNG. This vessel could potentially serve a dual purpose, as the bio-LNG could also be used as a cleaner fuel for ships, expanding the environmental benefits of the arrangement beyond the primary supply agreement.

Strategic Energy Diversification
YTL PowerSeraya, one of Singapore's largest power generators, stated that this initiative supports the country's goal of diversifying its low-carbon energy sources. The company plays a significant role in Singapore's energy sector, providing roughly 30% of the nation's electricity demand.
The agreement aligns with Singapore's broader energy strategy and commitment to incorporating renewable gases into its energy supply mix. This move represents a concrete step toward reducing the city-state's power generation sector's carbon footprint.
Industry Context and Regional Momentum
This landmark deal follows several other announcements about biomethane made during a recent major energy conference in Singapore. The timing and context of these announcements indicate the city-state's growing commitment to incorporating renewable gases into its energy supply framework.
The agreement comes at a time when the region is showing increased interest in renewable energy solutions and sustainable fuel alternatives. The bio-LNG supply deal represents a practical implementation of these renewable energy commitments, moving beyond policy announcements to actual commercial agreements and supply arrangements.
The establishment of this first physical bio-LNG supply agreement in Asia could potentially serve as a model for similar arrangements throughout the region, as other countries and companies observe the implementation and results of this pioneering partnership between the Singaporean and Malaysian companies.
