Winda Energy Oy (renewable energy project development company) has announced plans to construct two industrial-scale battery storage facilities in the Central Finland municipalities of Äänekoski and Laukaa, with the projects combining to deliver a total capacity of 150 MWh.

The developments are being financed by Prague-based investment group Wood & Company, with construction on both sites beginning in spring 2026.

Project Specifications and Timeline

The Äänekoski facility will have a power output of 30 MW and a storage capacity of 60 MWh, while the larger Laukaa project will deliver 45 MW of power output and 90 MWh of capacity.

Construction at both locations is expected to take approximately one year, with full commercial operations planned for the second quarter of 2027. Winda Energy is responsible for the development and design of both projects, while Wood & Company is providing the financing through its Renewables sub-fund.

The arrangement brings together what the companies describe as Winda's local project development expertise with Wood & Co's international capital.

Role in Finland's Energy Transition

The projects are presented by Winda Energy as a direct response to the growing penetration of variable renewable energy sources in the Finnish electricity system.

Battery storage facilities are capable of responding instantly to imbalances between electricity production and consumption, according to the company, strengthening security of supply, improving grid reliability, and helping stabilize electricity prices.

Tuomas Hooli, CEO of Winda Energy, said battery storage is the backbone of a reliable renewable energy system. "With Äänekoski and Laukaa, we are delivering exactly the kind of flexible capacity Finland needs as the share of wind and solar in the grid continues to grow."

The two facilities are described as continuing Winda Energy's growth in the energy storage sector. The company, founded in 2011 and majority owned by the BHM group (Central European investment group), develops wind, solar, and energy storage projects across Finland, managing them from initial planning through to completion.

Wood & Co's Investment Criteria

Robert Doucha, Investment Director of the Wood & Co Renewables sub-fund, said the group focuses on projects that have reached a ready-to-build stage at the point of investment. "Local expertise on the part of our partners is essential for the successful delivery of these projects," he said, citing the planned start of full commercial operations in the second quarter of 2027.

Wood & Company was founded in 1991 and holds a leading position in the Central European financial and investment market. The group maintains offices in eight European cities, including Prague, Bratislava, Warsaw, Milan, Bucharest, Budapest, Dublin, and London.

Its activities span corporate finance and capital markets, securities trading, and asset management, and it also operates real estate funds and the online investment platform Portu.

Grid Stability at the Core of the Development

Both the Äänekoski and Laukaa projects are described as strengthening grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the Finnish electricity system.

The broader context for the development is Finland's expanding base of wind and solar generation, which introduces increasing variability into electricity supply and creates demand for fast-responding storage assets.

Winda Energy has positioned energy storage as a cornerstone of the future energy system, emphasizing the technology's ability to balance production and consumption in real time.

The company's stated core values include active local dialogue and professional project development, factors it considers relevant to the siting and planning of facilities in communities such as Äänekoski and Laukaa.

The combined 150 MWh across the two sites represents a significant addition to battery storage infrastructure in Finland, where grid reliability and price stability have become prominent concerns as the country's renewable energy capacity continues to expand.
