Vattenfall has officially inaugurated the Bruzaholm onshore wind farm in Eksjö municipality in southern Sweden, marking a significant expansion of fossil-free electricity capacity in a region where demand for clean power is described as greatest.

The ceremony was attended by Vattenfall CEO Anna Borg and Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt, reflecting the industrial partnership at the center of the project.

Scale and Technical Specifications

Bruzaholm wind farm comprises 21 wind turbines supplied by Siemens Gamesa, each rated at 6.6 MW, giving the facility a total installed capacity of 139 MW. The turbines stand 240 meters in total height, and the park covers a total area of approximately 13 square kilometers.

Landowners within that footprint include Sveaskog and the Church of Sweden. The wind farm is expected to produce 460 GWh of electricity annually. Construction began in the summer of 2023, and in addition to the turbines themselves, Vattenfall has built an associated battery energy storage system.

That system consists of 60 battery modules supplied by Fluence, with a total output of 38 MW and a storage capacity of 38 MWh. The battery installation is designed to help stabilize the electricity grid and enable more flexible use of the power generated on-site.

The Volvo Power Purchase Agreement

A long-term power purchase agreement between Vattenfall and AB Volvo means that approximately 50 per cent of Bruzaholm's production has been allocated to the vehicle and industrial group. Vattenfall says the agreement is intended to secure Volvo's long-term access to competitive electricity for use in its Swedish industrial production, including a planned battery factory in Mariestad.

Martin Lundstedt, CEO of Volvo Group, said that being involved early in projects through purchasing commitments allows large electricity consumers like Volvo to contribute to more fossil-free power being produced.

He also highlighted the role of battery storage in changing the dynamics of power consumption, noting that historically electricity had to be produced at the same moment it was consumed, a constraint that growing battery storage capacity is beginning to dissolve.

Anna Borg, Vattenfall's CEO, described the combination of the wind farm and the Volvo agreement as an example of how business-driven partnerships can create value for both business and society. She also welcomed the government's decision to direct a share of the property tax generated by the park to the host municipality.

Local Financial Benefits

Eksjö municipality stands to receive ongoing financial support linked to the wind farm's operation. Under the Swedish government's wind power support scheme, Eksjö will receive approximately USD 0.30 million for 2026, with the payment structured as an annual disbursement.

Vattenfall has also committed to an annual subsidy of approximately USD 28917 directed to local associations, which the press release states can be used for investments in bathing areas, sports facilities, and community centers.

Biodiversity Commitments

Vattenfall states it has taken a range of measures during the development of Bruzaholm to ensure the project makes a positive contribution to biodiversity. These include reducing the overall impact on nature, preserving dead wood, protecting orchids, and taking steps to account for the presence of capercaillie, bats and pollinators in and around the wind farm's footprint.

Industrial Context

The inauguration of Bruzaholm comes as Swedish industry faces growing demand for reliable supplies of fossil-free electricity to support decarbonisation efforts and maintain industrial competitiveness.

Vattenfall has positioned the wind farm explicitly in that context, with Anna Borg describing it as an important addition of fossil-free electricity production for the electrification and competitiveness of industry in southern Sweden, as well as for households and businesses in the region.

The Volvo Group, headquartered in Gothenburg, employs 100,000 people and reported net sales of USD 51.3 billion in 2025. The group's operations span trucks, buses, construction equipment, and power solutions for marine and industrial applications across nearly 180 markets.
