Vattenfall has acquired a wind development project in Dittelsheim-Heßloch, Rhineland-Palatinate, from ABO Energy, expanding its onshore wind portfolio in Germany and creating a combined development cluster of up to 70 megawatts alongside an adjacent project it already holds in the region.
Two Approved Projects, One Shared Grid Connection
The newly acquired Dittelsheim-Heßloch project provides capacity for up to six wind turbine sites and sits directly adjacent to Vattenfall's existing project in Mettenheim, where the company intends to construct four wind turbines.
Both projects have received planning approval, and each holds a secured grid connection. Together, the two wind farms could accommodate up to ten turbines with a combined installed capacity of up to 70 MW.
Vattenfall intends to connect both wind farms to the grid via a single shared substation. The company said the combined annual electricity output of the two facilities would be sufficient to meet the power needs of approximately 40,000 households.
Philipp Heucke, head of onshore development at Vattenfall in Germany, said the acquisition presented an opportunity to generate operational and financial efficiencies.
"We are pleased to have been given the opportunity to take over the project. Bundling the wind farms creates valuable synergies that lead to cost savings and thus have a positive effect on the economic viability of the wind farms," he said.
Infrastructure Sharing as a Strategic Model
The Dittelsheim-Heßloch and Mettenheim projects are being presented by Vattenfall as a model for the close integration of neighbouring developments. By sharing infrastructure, the company said it could deploy resources efficiently, optimise grid connection capacity, and improve the overall economics of both projects. The approach, according to the company, benefits both the financial performance of the individual developments and the local energy transition.
The two sites together are described as forming a significant wind energy hub in the Rheinhessen region, which Vattenfall said would meaningfully strengthen regional renewable energy generation in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Grid Delays Pose Risk to Investment Decisions
While announcing the acquisition, Vattenfall used the occasion to raise concerns about the pace of grid infrastructure development in Germany. Heucke warned that a mismatch between the expansion of renewable energy projects and the availability of grid connections was creating uncertainty for developers and threatening the financial viability of projects.
"If projects are delayed because grid connections are missing or arrive later than expected, that creates uncertainty for developers. The delays have a direct impact on the economic viability of the projects, and you have to examine whether they are still financially viable. As a result, investment decisions can also be delayed," Heucke said.
The company did not specify particular projects or regions where such delays had been encountered but framed the issue as a broader systemic challenge requiring reliable regulatory conditions and grid expansion that keep pace with renewable capacity growth.
Vattenfall's Growing German Pipeline
Vattenfall said it has now initiated permitting procedures for 26 wind energy projects in Germany. Subject to regulatory approval, the company's applied-for project portfolio encompasses more than 150 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of more than one gigawatt. A significant portion of that pipeline is concentrated in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg.
The company described Germany as one of the most important markets for renewable energy expansion in Europe and said it plays a central role in its broader investment plans. The acquisition of the Dittelsheim-Heßloch project was characterised as consistent with Vattenfall's long-term growth strategy in the country.
Vattenfall said it pursues renewable development in collaboration with municipalities, landowners, and regional partners, and emphasised that reliable regulatory frameworks and timely grid expansion are prerequisites for that strategy to succeed.
