Atmos Renewables has selected Valo, the global battery energy storage integrator, to deliver the 400 MW / 1,600 MWh Teebar Battery Energy Storage System in Queensland, Australia. The project is one of the largest battery energy storage projects currently committed to construction in Queensland.

Teebar BESS was announced just days after the launch of Valo itself, the joint venture between Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions, making it a significant early milestone for the new company.

Location and Grid Role

The project is located in the Fraser Coast region, adjacent to the Teebar Creek Substation. According to Valo, the facility will help strengthen grid stability and support the growing integration of renewable energy across the National Electricity Market (NEM). The project is expected to reach commercial operation in late 2028.

Capacity Investment Scheme and Grid-Forming Approval

Valo will support Atmos Renewables in meeting the performance, reliability, and social license requirements associated with Australia's Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), a government initiative designed to accelerate investment in reliable clean energy infrastructure.

Teebar BESS has also secured Generator Performance Standards (GPS) approval for grid-forming operation in the NEM, an achievement Valo says reflects its experience delivering advanced grid-forming energy storage technology that supports system strength, grid stability, and renewable energy integration.

Technology and long-term Service Agreement

The Teebar BESS project will utilise Valo's GridSolve Quantum2 energy storage system and GEMS software, combining intelligent energy management with advanced power plant control to optimise performance, support grid requirements, and maximise asset value.

The technology foundation will be complemented by a long-term service agreement providing comprehensive performance and availability guarantees, maintenance, remote operational support, software updates, and performance monitoring.

Statements from Both Companies

Suraj Narayan, Managing Director Australia at Valo, said Atmos Renewables is developing a portfolio of strategically located renewable energy assets to support Australia's energy transition, and that Valo is proud to support that vision with proven energy storage technology and delivery expertise.

He described Australia as one of the world's most advanced energy storage markets and said Teebar BESS represents another important step in supporting the country's transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.

Narayan added that Valo's experience delivering and commissioning grid-scale battery projects across the NEM, combined with a track record through grid connection and hold point testing, gives developers confidence that projects can be delivered safely, reliably, and on schedule.

Nigel Baker, CEO of Atmos Renewables, said Teebar BESS is an important project for the company and will play a significant role in supporting Queensland's growing renewable energy system while providing long-term benefits for the local community.

Baker said that as the project moves into construction, the company is pleased to be partnering with Valo, whose experience in delivering large-scale battery storage projects will help ensure Teebar is built to a high standard and positioned as a quality long-term project for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Valo's Australian Portfolio Grows

Teebar BESS expands Valo's Australian energy storage portfolio to more than 7.6 GWh. Valo says this demonstrates the trust and confidence customers continue to place in its technology, its NEM grid experience, and its track record of delivering utility-scale energy storage projects across Australia.

Growing Role of Storage in the NEM

According to the announcement, as renewable energy generation continues to expand across Australia, large-scale battery energy storage systems are increasingly helping to strengthen grid reliability, flexibility, and resilience while supporting greater levels of renewable energy integration.

Valo, which operates in Australia, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, has delivered more than 130 utility-scale energy storage projects worldwide and builds systems combining advanced hardware, intelligent software, engineering expertise, and end-to-end lifecycle services.

Powering Ahead: Track Every Major Power Project Shaping Australia's Energy Future

Australia's power sector is expanding at a pace few regions can match, with gigawatts of new capacity, grid modernization programs, and renewable integrations moving from announcement to execution. The real question is not whether these projects will transform the market, but whether you will see them coming before your competitors do.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research gives stakeholders across the power value chain a single, continuously updated view of project activity across the region. From early-stage plant proposals to commissioned infrastructure, every development is captured, classified, and delivered with the context you need to act.

Whether you are an equipment supplier, EPC contractor, investor, or policy analyst, timely intelligence on power projects across Australia can sharpen your bidding strategy, strengthen partnerships, and reveal opportunities long before they become public knowledge.
