Nala Renewables has issued the Notice to Proceed (NTP) for the Nala Vuolijoki 125 MW/250 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Finland, marking the transition of the project from development into construction.

At 125 MW / 250 MWh, Nala Vuolijoki is one of the largest BESS projects in Finland to start construction, and the company described it as another significant milestone in its growth in the Finnish renewable energy market.

Finnish Pipeline Reaches 275 MW/550 MWh

With the addition of Nala Vuolijoki, Nala's pipeline in Finland now stands at 275 MW/550 MWh. This capacity combines the Nala Vuolijoki project with the Kauhava 50 MW/100 MWh BESS project, which was recently energized, and the newly acquired Kärppiö 100 MW/200 MWh BESS project.

Leadership Perspective

Remy Verot, Interim CEO at Nala Renewables, said the milestone highlights the strength of Nala's integrated business model and its ability to create value throughout the project lifecycle.

According to Verot, by combining in-house expertise across development, financing, construction and operations with close partner collaboration, the company is well positioned to navigate the evolving complexities of the energy transition and deliver high-quality projects that support both grid resilience and renewable energy growth in Finland and its other focus markets.

Project Partners and Financing

A group of partners is working on the project. Nala Renewables is serving as developer and owner, Despro is acting as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor and providing local engineering support, Destia Oy is the Balance of Plant (BOP) contractor, and Sungrow is the BESS technology supplier. Rabobank is providing the long-term finance for the project.

Gijs Hofman, Executive Director at Rabobank, said the bank is pleased to support Nala Renewables with the long-term financing of the battery energy storage project. He noted that the transaction builds on the bank's relationship with Nala and its owner, IFM Investors, a key institutional client of Rabobank.

According to Hofman, the project demonstrates the important role that large-scale energy storage can play in strengthening grid resilience and enabling the continued integration of renewable energy and reflects the bank's commitment to supporting leading clients in delivering the infrastructure required for the energy transition.

Technology Supplier's View

Henry Nordman Särkisilta, Head of Sales Utility at Sungrow Finland, said that as Finland adds more renewable energy, large-scale storage will play an increasingly important role in creating a flexible and resilient power system. He said Sungrow is pleased to support Nala Renewables with the company's energy storage technology and local expertise in Finland.
