Afcons Infrastructure Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited, India's two top EPC companies, have submitted a technical proposal in response to the bid by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for the construction of a 21 km underground tunnel as part of the 508.17km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
The NHSRCL opened the technical bids for the contract package MAHSR-C2 of the USD 20 billion megaproject on February 09, 2023. The bids include tunneling works for a 21 km long tunnel including a 7 km undersea tunnel. As per the specifications, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will be used for 16 km of the tunnel and the remaining 5 km will be constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NAT M).
This 21km tunnel will feature a single tube to accommodate twin tracks. The depths of construction will range between 25 m and 65 m below the ground level, with the lowest point being 114 m beneath Parsik Hill. One of the most ambitious and awaited mega projects in India, it is expected to be completed by 2026. Once completed, commuting between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be possible in 3 hours at a maximum velocity of 350 km/hour.
