UK Onshore Wind Record Set as 80-Metre Turbine Blades Begin Arriving at Mill Rig Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire

The longest turbine blades ever to be installed at a UK onshore wind farm have begun arriving at the Mill Rig Wind Farm site in South Lanarkshire, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the 33.4MW project being developed by OnPath Energy.

Record-Breaking Blades on the Move

Each of the blades measures 80 meters in length, and their delivery to the South Lanarkshire site represents a first for onshore wind energy in the United Kingdom.

The components are being transported by specialist haulage teams, with deliveries scheduled through the night to minimize disruption to surrounding communities.

The planning and coordination effort has involved principal contractors RJ McLeod, turbine manufacturer Nordex, McFadyen Transport, Renfrewshire Council, and South Lanarkshire Council.

Once installed, the blades will form part of six turbines supplied by the Nordex Group. These will be the first Nordex N163/5.X turbines to be installed anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Jason Welch, regional vice-president and managing director of Nordex UK and Ireland, said the deliveries underline how quickly turbine technology is advancing and the role it plays in delivering more efficient, higher-yield renewable energy projects.

Turbine Specifications and Energy Output

The six turbines at Mill Rig will reach tip heights of 199.5 meters. Their blades sweep 50 percent more area than the largest turbines at the nearby Kype Muir Extension wind farm, and with a higher rated power, the Mill Rig turbines are expected to produce around 33 percent more energy than those earlier machines.

OnPath Energy (renewable energy developer) states that once operational, the six turbines will generate enough renewable electricity to power more than 45,000 homes annually and displace around 27,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The project is expected to reach full commissioning and energization by the end of summer 2026.

Jules Rankin-Perez, head of construction at OnPath Energy, described the arrival of the blades as a defining moment for the project. He said the scale of the components was remarkable, but that more importantly, they represent a step change in how efficiently renewable energy can be generated.

He added that using the latest turbine technology allows more clean power to be delivered from fewer turbines, which benefits both the environment and the local community.

Supply Chain and Jobs

The wider Mill Rig development is supporting around 300 jobs. OnPath Energy reports that an estimated USD 123.71 million of contract value has been directed to firms operating within 60 kilometers of the site, reflecting a deliberate effort to anchor economic benefit in the local region.

Nordex, which previously supplied turbines for the Kype Muir Extension project, is an onshore original equipment manufacturer specializing in the design, sale, installation, manufacture, and servicing of wind turbines in the 4 to 7 megawatt market. The company has to date installed wind turbines with a total capacity of around 65 gigawatts across more than 40 countries worldwide.

Technical and Construction Management

OnPath Energy has worked with Natural Power (renewable energy consultancy) in the role of Owner's Engineer for Mill Rig Wind Farm. Natural Power provided end-to-end technical and construction management expertise and served as Principal Designer under the Construction, Design and Management regulations.

The organization has been responsible for coordinating design safety, monitoring the progress of the works, and coordinating contractors to maintain quality and compliance throughout the build.

Angie Smith, senior construction project manager at Natural Power, said the arrival of the first blade set at the site is a major milestone for the project and a testament to the collaboration and cooperation of the whole project team.

She added that Natural Power will continue to monitor the progress of works and quality compliance throughout the construction phase ahead of turbine installation completion and commissioning.

Community Benefit and Policy Context

Mill Rig includes a USD 6.80 million community benefit fund that will support local groups, organizations, and environmental projects across South Lanarkshire over the lifespan of the wind farm.

Rankin-Perez said the project is not only about generating renewable energy but also about delivering long-term value for the communities around it, and that it will support jobs across the supply chain and contribute to the Scottish Government's ambitions to deliver 20 gigawatts of onshore wind capacity by 2030.

Mill Rig is the latest in a series of major renewable energy projects by OnPath Energy and forms part of its growing operational portfolio of 12 wind farms across the United Kingdom. The company states that the project reflects its continued commitment to becoming the UK's leading onshore renewables developer.
