Trina Storage, the energy storage business unit of Trinasolar, has been selected to supply the battery energy storage system for the 50 MW / 196 MWh AEJ Nozu Battery Energy Storage System project in Oita Prefecture, Japan. The announcement was made from Tokyo on Oct. 14, 2026.
Contract Award Under FY2023 Long-Term Decarbonization Auction
The project, located in Nishihata, Nozu Town, Usuki City, was awarded under Japan's FY2023 Long-Term Decarbonization Auction. It is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2028. For the project, Trina Storage will supply its Elementa 2 Pro 5 MWh battery energy storage solution.

Product and Deployment Details
The Elementa 2 Pro is Trina Storage's 5 MWh battery energy storage solution, and it will serve as the core technology supplied for the AEJ Nozu project. The project's configuration of 50 MW of power capacity and 196 MWh of energy capacity places it among Japan's utility-scale storage deployments, where grid-scale battery storage is expanding, according to the company's statement.
Trina Storage says the Nozu Project adds to its growing track record in Japan's utility-scale energy storage market. As deployment of grid-scale battery storage expands in the country, the company has established local capabilities to support projects from system configuration and technical consultation through delivery coordination and after-sales service.

Local Capability and Project Lifecycle Support
Through its team in Japan, Trina Storage works closely with customers and project partners to address local technical and project requirements, providing support throughout the project lifecycle.
According to the company, this local capability is complemented by its global experience in battery cell technology, system integration, and utility-scale energy storage deployment.
The company's approach for the Japanese market, as described in the announcement, combines advanced technology with strong local capabilities. Dr. Leo Zhao, Head of Energy Storage (APAC) at Trina Storage, commented on the award, "We are pleased to support Japan's growing renewable energy portfolio through the AEJ Nozu Battery Energy Storage System project. With Trinasolar's longstanding experience in solar and Trina Storage's growing presence in utility-scale energy storage, we see significant opportunities to support Japan's evolving energy needs. For Nozu and other projects in Japan, our focus is on combining advanced technology with strong local capabilities."
Broader Expansion in the Japanese Market
The Nozu contract is one of several engagements Trina Storage has announced in Japan. The company is also supplying a 160MWh utility-scale BESS project in the Kyushu region, adding to its growing project track record in the country.
In September, Trina Storage also signed a memorandum of understanding with AMP-lify for approximately 1GWh of grid-connected BESS projects in Japan. That agreement features the company's latest Elementa 3 series, a newer product line than the Elementa 2 Pro solution designated for the Nozu project.
The MoU agreement, together with projects like Nozu, reflects Trina Storage's continued expansion in Japan as demand for utility-scale energy storage grows, according to the company.
Company Background
Trina Storage operates as the energy storage business unit of Trinasolar, which the company describes as a global leader in smart PV and energy storage solutions. The announcement was issued by Trina Solar Energy Development Pte. Ltd.
The AEJ Nozu project represents Trina Storage's participation in Japan's Long-Term Decarbonization Auction framework, under which the project was awarded in the FY2023 round.
With completion targeted for the third quarter of 2028, the 50 MW / 196 MWh system in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture, will join the company's expanding portfolio of utility-scale battery energy storage deployments in the Japanese market, alongside the 160 MWh Kyushu project and the approximately 1 GWh of grid-connected projects covered under the AMP-lify MoU.
Stay Ahead of Japan's Power Project Pipeline
Every new transmission line, gas-fired plant, and renewable megawatt added to the grid begins as a project announcement, and those who spot it first win the contracts that follow. In Japan's fast-moving power sector, that head start is everything.
