Vattenfall has signed a tolling agreement with Royal Vopak covering part of the planned battery storage system near Meede in the province of Groningen. Under the agreement, Vattenfall gains access to 100 MW of capacity, equivalent to 400 MWh of storage, which the company says will allow it to respond better to fluctuations in supply and demand on the electricity market.

The large-scale battery storage project is being developed and operated by Vopak and will have a total capacity of 150 MW with a storage duration of four hours. Commercial commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

Supporting a More Flexible Energy System

According to the companies, the importance of flexibility grows as the share of wind and solar energy in the electricity system increases. Battery storage makes it possible to store surpluses of renewably generated electricity when production is high, and to make that energy available again when demand rises or output from renewable sources declines.

With the agreement, Vattenfall says it is strengthening its position in the field of flexibility. The deal also brings the company closer to its target of contracting at least 1.5 GW of battery storage capacity in its core markets.

Erik Suichies, Head of Wholesale Energy at Vattenfall, said: "As our energy system becomes increasingly sustainable, flexibility plays a crucial role in keeping supply and demand in balance. Battery storage helps make better use of sustainable electricity and contributes to a more reliable and efficient energy system. We are therefore pleased with this collaboration with Vopak and gladly support the development of large-scale energy storage in the Netherlands."

A Milestone for Vopak's Storage Ambitions

For Vopak, the agreement marks an important milestone in the further expansion of its electricity storage activities. Jarno Veldhoven, Vice President Business Development Battery Energy Storage Solutions at Vopak, said the company's goal is to help the world move forward.

He noted that Vopak is known for the safe storage of essential energy products and actively contributes to a sustainable future by investing in infrastructure for the energy transition.

"As sustainable energy takes up an ever larger share of the energy mix, the need for battery storage systems also grows," Veldhoven said. "With our ambition to offer reliable and affordable battery solutions, we are delighted to welcome Vattenfall as a long-term partner."

Strengthening Dutch Energy Infrastructure

The collaboration brings together two companies that have played important roles in the Dutch energy sector for years. By combining large-scale storage infrastructure with market knowledge and expertise in flexibility optimisation, Vattenfall and Vopak say they aim to contribute to a more robust and future-proof electricity system.

The companies point out that large-scale batteries are increasingly seen as an essential part of the energy transition. They enable greater volumes of sustainable energy to be integrated into the electricity system while helping to use the existing electricity grid more efficiently.

Vattenfall's Growing Storage Portfolio

The Vopak deal is the latest in a series of battery storage agreements announced by Vattenfall. In August 2026, the company signed a long-term agreement with Return for Sirius, a 200 MW / 800 MWh battery storage facility in Winschoten, Groningen, which will be connected to the grid there.

In December 2025, Vattenfall contracted 100 MW (400 MWh) of storage capacity in the Leopard battery being built by Giga Storage, capacity the company said it intends to use at its own discretion.

Separately, in October 2026 Vattenfall announced it is developing, at the request of grid operator TenneT, a flexible energy installation at the site of its existing production location in Almere, intended to reduce pressure on the electricity grid in the Flevopolder, Gelderland and Utrecht.
