Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commenced construction on an 800 MW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, marking one of the company's largest single-state clean energy undertakings. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in Kurnool, attended by senior state government officials and company leadership.

Project Composition and Structure

The project combines equal portions of solar and wind generation capacity, with 400 MW of solar power to be developed at Pattikonda in Kurnool district and 400 MW of wind power to be installed at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram district. The total investment for the project stands at USD 602.8 million.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited will serve as the project developer for the wind asset, while Suzlon, a wind turbine manufacturer and end-to-end wind energy solutions provider, will handle the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction scope for the wind component at Ananthapuram.

Of the 400 MW solar component, 200 MW has been designated as a Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy project for NTPC. That portion will incorporate a Battery Energy Storage System with a storage capacity of 25 MW and 50 MWh. The remaining 200 MW of solar capacity has been described as available for future allocation.

Transmission and Land Requirements

The project has secured 800 MW Inter-State Transmission System connectivity at the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL Substations. This connectivity is intended to allow efficient evacuation of renewable power through the national transmission network.

The total land requirement for the project is 3,462 acres. Of that figure, 2,700 acres will be used for the solar installation and 760 acres for the wind development.

The project is being implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which the state government has framed to encourage large-scale clean energy investments and accelerate renewable capacity addition.

Employment and Economic Impact

The project is expected to generate approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across the development, construction, and operational phases. It will also provide annual lease rental income to landowners in the affected areas, according to the company's statement.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Shri Lokesh Nara, Minister of HRD, ITE&C and RTG for the Government of Andhra Pradesh, who served as Chief Guest.

Also present were Shri T.G. Bharath, Minister for Industries and Commerce and District In-charge Minister for Anantapur; Shri K.E. Shyam Kumar, Member of Legislative Assembly for Pattikonda; Shri Kalava Srinivasulu, Member of Legislative Assembly for Rayadurg AC; and Dr. A. Siri, IAS, District Collector and Magistrate of Kurnool District. Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of Tata Power, also attended the ceremony.

Nara Lokesh said the groundbreaking reflects growing confidence among leading enterprises in the state's policy framework. "As we continue to strengthen our infrastructure and investment ecosystem, partnerships such as these will play a pivotal role in advancing Andhra Pradesh's long-term growth while contributing to India's clean energy transition," he said.

Dr. Praveer Sinha described the project as a significant step in the company's mission. "By integrating 400 MW of solar and 400 MW of wind capacity, the project will contribute to the development of reliable and round-the-clock renewable power, supporting the nation's growing energy needs while advancing sustainability goals," he said, adding that the company is grateful to the state government for its support in fostering a conducive ecosystem for clean energy investments.

Suzlon's Role and Existing Footprint

Girish Tanti, Co-founder of Suzlon Group, noted the company's existing presence in Andhra Pradesh, stating that Suzlon has partnered with the state for over two decades and currently contributes nearly 38 percent of its installed wind energy capacity through approximately 1,600 MW across eight wind sites in the state.

Tanti said that through this 400 MW project, the combined capacity between Suzlon and Tata Power Renewables has crossed the 1 GW milestone. "Together, we have now crossed the 1 GW milestone, reflecting our shared commitment to accelerating India's clean energy transition and supporting Andhra Pradesh's vision of an energy-secure future," he said.

Tanti also referenced Andhra Pradesh's stated ambition to achieve over 72 GW of renewable energy by 2030 and reach net zero by 2047.

The project is being developed in alignment with the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which the state government designed to encourage large-scale investments in clean energy, accelerate renewable capacity additions, and promote sustainable industrial growth.
