Sungrow and Masdar have signed an agreement for the supply of energy storage and photovoltaic inverter solutions for what is being described as the world's first gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project, located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Project Scale and Scope

The round-the-clock renewable energy project, known as RTC, is being developed by Masdar in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company.

The project combines 5.2 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity with a 19 gigawatt-hour battery energy storage system, with the goal of delivering baseload renewable energy at a scale that has not previously been achieved.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sungrow will supply 7.5 gigawatt-hours of its PowerTitan 3.0 energy storage systems alongside 2.6 gigawatts of photovoltaic inverter solutions. The project is scheduled to become operational in 2027.

The project is designed to serve a broad range of power consumers, including energy-intensive industries, business operations, residential communities, and what the companies describe as emerging digital infrastructure. Masdar and Sungrow have stated that RTC is intended to function as a blueprint that could be replicated in other locations around the world.

System Design and Configuration

The RTC project will deploy more than 1,000 PowerTitan 3.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems integrated with advanced photovoltaic inverter technologies.

Each unit is built around an AC block design and incorporates rack-level management, features that Sungrow says are intended to enhance operational safety and efficiency.

The systems are configured to operate on a cycle of eight hours of charging followed by sixteen hours of discharging, a schedule designed to support a stable and flexible renewable energy supply throughout each day.

This operational pattern is central to the project's ambition of delivering continuous clean power rather than the intermittent output typically associated with solar generation.

Sungrow describes the PowerTitan 3.0 as incorporating a fully liquid-cooled Silicon Carbide Power Conversion System, which the company says achieves a maximum efficiency of 99.3 percent. The system's round-trip efficiency is rated at 90 percent.

Performance in Extreme Heat

One of the stated design requirements for the project is the ability to operate reliably in the UAE's climate, where ambient temperatures routinely reach extreme levels.

According to Sungrow, the PowerTitan 3.0 systems are capable of operating at temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius without any reduction in output, a characteristic the company says makes the technology well-suited to the Gulf environment.

This thermal tolerance is a significant consideration for large-scale battery storage deployments in the Middle East, where heat management has historically been a limiting factor for energy storage performance and longevity.

Grid Reliability and Competitive Tariffs

The RTC project represents a departure from conventional approaches to renewable energy deployment, which have typically relied on separate generation and storage assets or on grid operators to manage the intermittency of solar and wind power.

By combining solar photovoltaic generation with a battery storage system at this scale, Masdar and EWEC are seeking to demonstrate that renewable energy can be supplied on a baseload basis, matching the reliability profile traditionally associated with fossil fuel generation.

Sungrow and Masdar stated that once operational, RTC will produce gigascale baseload renewable energy at a globally competitive tariff, though no specific tariff figure was disclosed. The project is intended to enhance grid resilience and flexibility while supporting the UAE's broader clean energy objectives.

Industry Context

The signing was announced in Abu Dhabi. Sungrow describes itself as a globally leading provider of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems. Masdar is a state-backed clean energy company headquartered in Abu Dhabi with investments and projects across multiple countries.

The agreement positions Sungrow as the primary technology supplier for one of the most technically ambitious renewable energy projects announced to date.

The combination of 5.2 gigawatts of solar capacity and 19 gigawatt-hours of storage in a single integrated project has no direct precedent at this scale, according to the project developers.
