Statkraft has taken delivery of a battery energy storage system at its Montes de Cierzo wind farm in the Navarrese municipality of Tudela, marking the Norwegian company's first such installation in Spain and one of the country's first hybridisations at a repowered wind facility.
A First for Statkraft in Spain
The battery energy storage system, which arrived at the site in July 2026, consists of six lithium-ion battery containers with a total installed capacity of 14.26 MW and a storage capacity of 28.51 MWh.
The system operates on a two-hour charge and discharge cycle. Once installed, the storage unit will be paired with a segment of the Montes de Cierzo wind farm that has an installed capacity of 25.8 MW, enabling that portion of the park to manage energy during production peaks when the grid is congested, improving overall efficiency and contributing to security of supply.
Statkraft describes itself as Europe's largest renewable energy producer and a leader in the power purchase agreement market. The company is committing an investment of 4.55 million to the hybridisation project, which is set to be installed in the coming months.

Key Suppliers and Public Funding
Two principal suppliers are involved in delivering the infrastructure. Hithium, the provider of the battery system, is currently constructing its second manufacturing plant outside China in the Foral Community of Navarre. Ingeteam is responsible for supplying both the power conversion equipment associated with the batteries, which are designed and manufactured in Navarre, and the plant control system.
The project has also been selected to receive public financial support from the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía, known as IDAE, which is attached to Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The grant can cover up to 24 percent of the investment in batteries and falls under the first call for aid for innovative energy storage projects hybridised with renewable electricity generation installations. The funding is drawn from European Next Generation EU funds, channelled through Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

Repowering Progress at Montes de Cierzo
The battery installation is taking place alongside the second and final phase of Statkraft's repowering of Montes de Cierzo, a wind farm that originally entered service in the year 2000.
The company has already replaced 44 turbines with 10 modern units. It is now advancing the last phase of the project, which will see four new turbines installed to replace the remaining 41 machines from the original configuration.
When fully operational, the repowered park will have reduced the number of turbines by 84 percent, falling from 85 to 14 machines in total, while increasing installed capacity by 50 percent, rising from 60 MW to 90 MW.
Annual clean energy production is estimated to double, moving from 145 GWh per year to approximately 300 GWh per year. The reduction in turbine numbers is intended to minimise the environmental footprint of the installation on the surrounding area.
With the battery storage system in place, Montes de Cierzo is set to become one of the first repowered wind farms in Spain to also be hybridised with an energy storage solution.
Broader Storage Ambitions Across Spain
Statkraft has identified energy storage as a strategic priority in Spain and is currently processing eleven additional battery hybridisation projects linked to existing renewable installations in Galicia, Andalusia, Navarre and Extremadura. Including the Montes de Cierzo equipment, those projects represent a combined capacity exceeding 200 MW.
Beyond hybridisation, the company is also planning two standalone storage installations in Spain, which together account for an additional 90 MW of installed capacity and a storage capacity of 360 MWh.
The company has stated its conviction that storage is a critical component in achieving a 100 percent renewable energy mix. Alongside its battery projects, Statkraft also operates pumped hydroelectric storage systems associated with its hydropower plants in the Nordic countries.
Statkraft has described the combination of repowering existing renewable assets and hybridising them with battery storage as one of the principal levers for accelerating the energy transition, arguing that the approach makes it possible to generate more clean energy with a reduced land footprint while improving the integration of renewables into the electricity system and maximising the value of infrastructure already in place.
