SSE Renewables' first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, is now fully operational. The 50MW / 100MWh BESS project is anticipated to provide power for over 80,000 homes. The Salisbury BESS is the flagship operational battery storage site in SSE’s portfolio.
Furthermore, construction of the 26-battery unit project began on a site next to the old Quidhampton Quarry in Salisbury in 2022, with SSE Renewables collaborating with technology group Wärtsilä. The Salisbury BESS will play a vital role in SSE’s Net Zero Acceleration Programme, a fully funded five-year investment plan that will see SSE Renewables invest over USD 15 billion by 2027.
Richard Cave-Bigley, the Director of Development and Construction of SSE Renewables, said, "Being a first-of-a-kind project for SSE, the project team has done a tremendous job throughout construction, and I’d like to congratulate everybody involved for their efforts to get to this stage, and I’d like to thank our project partners, Wärtsilä, for their work."
In addition to Salisbury, SSE Renewables is currently constructing two battery storage projects in the UK: a 150MW battery project in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, scheduled for completion in the first half of next year, and a 320MW battery project in Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire.
SSE Renewables has launched an ambitious Net Zero Acceleration Program. This programme represents a significant commitment to accelerating progress towards net zero. The company plans to invest around USD 15 billion by 2026, which is a 65% uplift on their previous plan. The programme aims to enable the delivery of over 25% of the 40GW offshore wind projects in UK by 2030. It also plans to facilitate more than 20% of the required investment in the UK’s electricity network infrastructure.
the Net Zero Acceleration Program will deliver:
The programme will be supported by further partnering in renewables and up to 25% minority stake sales in SSEN Transmission and SSEN Distribution. In conclusion, the Net Zero Acceleration Programme represents a significant step forward in SSE Renewables' commitment to leading the energy transition by executing renewable power projects in UK.
