Sonnedix has begun operations at Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras, its first large-scale hybrid solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system projects to become operational worldwide, and the first hybrid installations in Portugal to begin operating connected to the national distribution grid.

Two Projects in Northern Portugal

The two projects, located in northern Portugal, deliver more than 68 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and more than 140 MWh of storage. Sonnedix Acail comprises 28.3 MWp of PV and 60.2 MWh of BESS, while Sonnedix Felgueiras comprises 39.9 MWp of PV and 80.3 MWh of BESS.

The storage systems were developed in parallel with their respective solar plants, sharing the same fenced perimeter. According to the company, this integrated approach optimized construction while preserving the surrounding landscape, with no requirement for additional land. Both BESS systems are now operating in hybrid mode with full grid charging capacity.

A Step in the Hybridization Strategy

The entry into operation of the two projects represents what Sonnedix describes as a landmark step in its global hybridisation strategy and demonstrates its evolution as a next-gen IPP.

The company describes this model as focused on industrial customers and the delivery of integrated energy solutions combining generation, storage, trading, and advanced energy management.

Gregorio Morales, Chief Commercial Officer of Sonnedix, said, "Storage is fundamental to our evolution as a next-gen IPP. By combining solar generation and batteries, we turn renewable energy into a more flexible, predictable product adapted to our customers' needs.

Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras are the first step of a global strategy that will enable us to offer increasingly sophisticated energy solutions aligned with real market demand."

Paulo Pimentel, Director of Sonnedix Portugal, added, "The completion and commissioning of Acail and Felgueiras marks a milestone for Sonnedix in Portugal. These projects reflect the evolution of our portfolio towards hybrid solutions capable of providing greater flexibility to the system and promoting a more efficient integration of renewable energy. With this progress, we continue to consolidate our long-term commitment to Portugal and to the communities in which we operate."

Financing Precedent

In March 2026, Sonnedix announced the financing of both projects, becoming one of the first structured transactions with commercial banks in Portugal for hybrid solar generation and battery storage facilities.

Storage Momentum in Portugal

The projects come online amid a strong push for storage in Portugal, which Sonnedix describes as a key element for integrating renewables and providing flexibility to the electricity system. In January 2026, Portugal reached 80.7% renewable generation, the highest share in the European Union, which according to the company, demonstrates the critical role that flexible assets will play in sustaining and accelerating that progress.

Sonnedix's Portfolio

Sonnedix is a global renewable energy company with a total portfolio capacity of close to 12 GW, including more than 1 GW under construction, 5 GW in operation and a development pipeline exceeding 5 GW.

The company supplies 100% clean electricity directly to its customers through a diversified portfolio of solar, wind, and storage assets, and operates in Chile, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The company continues to expand its presence in OECD countries through organic and inorganic growth.
