SLB Secures Major Ultra-Deepwater Completions Contract from Petrobras for Santos Basin Project
Global technology company SLB announced on September 25, 2025, that it has been awarded a major contract from Petrobras to provide services and technology for up to 35 ultra-deepwater wells in the Santos Basin. The wells are part of the second development of the Atapu and Sépia fields, targeting massive pockets of oil and gas beneath thick salt layers located up to 2,000 meters below the ocean's surface.
Project Scope and Technology Deployment
As part of its project scope, SLB will deploy advanced electric completions technologies and digital solutions that deliver precise, real-time production intelligence and improved reservoir management to produce these valuable and hard-to-access resources optimally. The completions work is scheduled to begin in mid-2026 and will feature advanced services and technology from SLB's completions portfolio.
The project will specifically utilize SLB's Electris high-flow-rate interval control valves, which are designed to increase production control and recovery from geologically complex, high-flow-rate wells. These electric completions are intended to enable predictive, real-time intelligence for optimal production performance.
Strategic Importance and Production Benefits
Paul Sims, president of Production Systems at SLB, stated that the project “will help Petrobras drive greater reliability, system uptime and production performance in those fields supporting Brazil's energy security and economic growth ambitions.” The wells target resources in the strategically important Santos Basin, representing a significant development in Brazil's offshore energy sector.
The advanced electric completions technologies and digital solutions are specifically designed to provide precise, real-time production intelligence and improved reservoir management capabilities. This technological approach aims to optimize the production of oil and gas resources that are considered both valuable and difficult to access due to their location beneath thick salt layers in ultra-deepwater conditions.

Previous Contract Awards and Competitive Process
This contract follows another major contract awarded to the SLB OneSubsea joint venture by Petrobras for the Atapu and Sépia fields in 2024. The previous contract includes standardized, pre-salt subsea production systems and related services, indicating a comprehensive approach to developing these offshore fields. The current contract was awarded following a competitive tender process, demonstrating Petrobras's systematic approach to selecting technology providers for this significant offshore development project.
The combination of both the 2024 OneSubsea contract and the newly announced completions contract represents a substantial commitment to developing the Atapu and Sépia fields using SLB's integrated technology solutions.
Company Background and Market Position
SLB trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SLB, while Petrobras trades under the symbol PBR. SLB describes itself as a global technology company that drives energy innovation for a balanced planet, with a global footprint in more than 100 countries and employees representing almost twice as many nationalities. The company focuses on innovating oil and gas operations, delivering digital solutions at scale, decarbonizing industries, and developing new energy systems that accelerate the energy transition.
The contract award reinforces SLB's position in the ultra-deepwater completions market and its ability to provide integrated technology solutions for complex offshore developments. The Santos Basin project represents a significant opportunity for SLB to demonstrate its advanced completions technologies in one of the world's most challenging offshore environments, where wells must access resources through thick salt layers at depths of up to 2,000 meters below the ocean surface.
