Skyborn Renewables has reached financial close on the Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm, securing more than USD 3.48 billion in financing for what the company describes as the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The milestone moves the project from development into active construction, with commercial operations targeted for 2028.

Project Scale and Location

Gennaker is located in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northern Germany. The wind farm will consist of 63 turbines delivering a combined installed capacity of 976.5 megawatts.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 3.8 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, which Skyborn says is sufficient to power around one million households with clean electricity.

The scale of the project places Gennaker at the forefront of offshore wind development in the German Baltic Sea, and its completion would represent a significant contribution to Germany's broader energy transition goals.

Financing Structure

The financing package was assembled through a consortium comprising 16 commercial lenders alongside the European Investment Bank. Together, these institutions provided the debt financing that enabled the project to cross the financial close threshold.

On the equity side, Stadtwerke München GmbH is named as the strategic equity partner in the transaction. Stadtwerke München, the Munich-based municipal utility, joins Skyborn Renewables as a stakeholder in the project, reflecting institutional confidence from both the private banking sector and established public energy providers in Germany.

Skyborn described the achievement as reflecting strong confidence in the company's ability to deliver large-scale offshore wind infrastructure. The involvement of the European Investment Bank alongside 16 commercial lenders signals broad institutional backing for the project at a time when large-scale renewable energy financing remains a complex undertaking across European markets.

Construction and Timeline

According to Skyborn's announcement, construction on the Gennaker wind farm is already underway. The company has set a target of reaching commercial operation in 2028, giving the project a construction window of several years to complete the installation of all 63 turbines and associated infrastructure in Baltic Sea waters off Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

No additional details regarding turbine specifications, primary contractors, or installation vessels were included in the announcement.

Regional Economic Impact

Beyond the energy output itself, Skyborn highlighted the economic significance of the project for the region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The company stated that Gennaker will anchor a long-term service base in Rostock-Warnemünde, the port city on Germany's Baltic coast.

This operations and maintenance hub is intended to support regional employment and generate economic value in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for what Skyborn described as decades to come.

The establishment of a service base in Rostock-Warnemünde positions the port as a long-term hub for the operational phase of the wind farm, which would extend well beyond the construction period and into the project's full operational life.

Germany's Energy Transition Context

Skyborn framed the Gennaker financial close as a major step forward for Germany's energy transition and energy security. Germany has set ambitious targets for expanding its offshore wind capacity as part of its strategy to phase out fossil fuels and nuclear power, and projects of Gennaker's scale are central to achieving those national objectives.

The Baltic Sea has been identified as a key expansion area for German offshore wind development alongside the more established North Sea corridor. Gennaker, as the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea according to Skyborn, would mark a significant scaling up of capacity in that body of water.

The involvement of a municipal utility like Stadtwerke München as an equity partner also reflects a broader trend of German cities and regional energy companies seeking direct stakes in large renewable energy infrastructure as part of their own decarbonization strategies.

Skyborn Renewables

Skyborn Renewables is the developer behind the Gennaker project. The company's announcement of financial close for a project exceeding USD 3.48 billion in secured financing represents one of the larger single offshore wind financing events in German waters in recent years.

The project's progression from development through to construction represents a full lifecycle milestone for the developer, moving from planning and permitting through to the active build phase that will eventually deliver nearly one gigawatt of offshore wind capacity to the German grid by the end of the decade.
