RWE Secures €551 Million Dutch Grant for Green Hydrogen Plant in Eemshaven
German energy company RWE has won a Dutch government grant exceeding EUR 500 million for a green hydrogen plant project in Eemshaven. The specific grant amount is EUR 551 million, representing a significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency(RVO) awarded a grant for an electrolyzer as part of the Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition (SDE++) funding scheme.
The project involves the construction of a 100 MW electrolysis plant near RWE's Magnum power plant site.
Project Location and Scope
The RWE 100 MW electrolysis project is situated near the Magnum Power Station in Eemshaven, in the northern part of the country. It has received funding from the Dutch government through the Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition Incentive Scheme (SDE++).
Achieved Milestone and Next Steps
Sopna Sury, Chief Operating Officer for Hydrogen at RWE Generation, stated that “It is fantastic to have secured government funding so soon after also obtaining the necessary permits. Both milestones are critical steps towards realizing the OranjeWind Electrolyzer project. Once operational, it will help advance the decarbonisation of industry in the Netherlands.”
RWE plans to operate the OranjeWind Electrolyzer using clean electricity from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, which it is developing in collaboration with its partner, TotalEnergies. The project already cleared a major hurdle last October when it received both construction and environmental permits. The following steps will focus on Front End Engineering and Design, identification of construction partners, and securing offtake before a financial investment decision for the OranjeWind electrolyzer can be taken.
