German energy company RWE has begun commercial operations of its first inertia-ready battery energy storage system (BESS) in Moerdijk, Netherlands, an innovative step toward enhancing grid stability in a rapidly decarbonizing.

The 7.5MW/11MWh system, which is now fully operational, is the first battery storage project in Central Europe capable of providing grid-forming inertia. Using advanced lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and ultra-fast inverters, the Moerdijk BESS can inject or absorb power within milliseconds critical for balancing power supply and demand as fossil-fuel-based systems are phased out.

“This system is a key milestone in our strategy to ensure grid stability as we transition to renewable energy,” said Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE.

Designed to Support Wind Power Integration

The project is part of the broader OranjeWind offshore wind development, a joint initiative between RWE and TotalEnergies. The Moerdijk BESS is designed to match the intermittent generation of wind energy with real-time electricity demand, helping to smooth out fluctuations and prevent grid instability.

As grid operators face increasing challenges from the variability of renewables, such battery systems are becoming essential. RWE’s solution offers grid-forming capabilities, allowing it to operate independently or in coordination with the grid, a feature traditionally provided by large rotating generators in fossil fuel power plants.

Pilot Phase and Future Expansion

The Moerdijk BESS will enter a two-year pilot phase during which RWE will collaborate with Dutch transmission system operator TenneT to define technical standards for inertia-ready storage systems. This includes establishing grid compliance protocols for BESS units with grid-forming properties.

The facility will serve as a blueprint for future battery storage projects worldwide. RWE plans to significantly expand its global BESS capacity, aiming to deploy scalable and adaptive storage solutions as part of its broader commitment to a sustainable energy transition.
