RWE held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on October 29, 2025, for what will become Germany's largest battery storage facility at the Gundremmingen energy site in Bavaria. The 400-megawatt plant will feature a storage capacity of 700 megawatt-hours and represents an investment of approximately EUR 230 million by the energy company.

The ceremony was attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder, marking the official start of construction for the flagship project. The facility is scheduled to commence commercial operation in early 2028 and will utilize the existing grid connection from the nuclear power plant currently undergoing decommissioning at the site.

Technical Specifications and Infrastructure

The Gundremmingen battery storage facility will be able to supply electricity continuously for almost 2 hours at its full 400 MW capacity. The installation will consist of more than 200 containers housing approximately 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells, which will be installed over the coming months.

The facility will incorporate state-of-the-art control technology and over 100 ultra-fast inverters, enabling it to supply or absorb electricity within milliseconds. This rapid response capability is designed to help stabilize the power grid, particularly during periods when wind and solar energy sources are not generating electricity.

Strategic Site Development

The Gundremmingen site in the Günzburg district served as a key component of Bavaria's electricity supply for decades. The location housed two nuclear power plant units that were shut down in 2017 and 2021, respectively, and the site is currently undergoing safe decommissioning processes. Despite the nuclear plant closure, approximately 400 RWE employees continue to work at the location.

According to Minister-President Söder, the battery storage facility is part of a broader development plan for the site. In addition to the new battery storage facility, a 55-hectare solar park and a gas-fired power station are also planned for construction at Gundremmingen, ensuring the location remains integral to Bavaria's energy infrastructure.

The Gundremmingen project represents a significant expansion of RWE's battery storage portfolio. The company currently operates battery storage systems with a total capacity of around 1.2 gigawatts across the United States, Europe, and Australia, with an additional 2.7 GW currently under construction.

RWE CEO Dr. Markus Krebber described the project as demonstrating the company's ongoing commitment to making consistent use of its sites, stating that the new storage facility represents “just the beginning” of their efforts. As part of its growth strategy, RWE plans to increase its worldwide battery storage capacity significantly.
