Root-Power's 34 MW Dounreay BESS Project Enters Construction Phase

Updated on May 29, 2025, 04:00 AM IST

Root-Power has announced that its 34 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project at Dounreay has officially entered the construction phase. The project, which was granted planning permission in January 2025, has reached a key milestone with the first construction work commencing at the 34MW site. The work is being conducted in partnership with SRL Consulting and Clyde Archaeology and forms the initial civil enabling phase, which will last several months.

Project Overview

The Dounreay BESS is located near the former nuclear power station in Caithness and will play a critical role in supporting the energy transition in northern Scotland. The 34 MW site will go live in 2026 and will provide fast-response flexibility services to the grid in an area facing unique challenges. Dan Shore, Head of Delivery at Root-Power, noted that the project has unique challenges due to its remote location, but the delivery team has developed a strategy to ensure efficient delivery.

Additionally, the delivery team is busy with commissioning work at the flagship project in Essex and is gearing up to commence construction on the next four projects.

Timeline

The project's timeline began with initial discussions with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in late 2023, followed by the obtaining of planning permission in January 2025. With the construction phase now underway, the project is on track to meet its planned completion date. Root-Power's progress on this project highlights its dedication to the energy transition and its role in the battery storage sector. The company's efforts will contribute to a more efficient and flexible energy grid in northern Scotland.
