Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced on Friday, August 29, that the company is developing one of the world's largest single-site solar projects spanning 550,000 acres of arid land in Kutch, Gujarat. The project, which is three times the size of Singapore, represents a significant expansion of the company's renewable energy initiatives.

Speaking to shareholders at the company's annual general meeting, Ambani stated that the site could meet nearly 10 percent of India's electricity needs within the next decade. At peak capacity, the project will deploy 55 MW of solar modules and 150 MWh of battery containers every day, making it among the fastest installations globally.

Infrastructure Integration and Connectivity

The solar project will connect seamlessly with Reliance's existing marine and land infrastructure at Jamnagar and Kandla, enabling large-scale solar and green hydrogen integration. This strategic positioning allows the company to leverage its current infrastructure investments for the renewable energy expansion.

The integrated approach will facilitate the production and export of green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel, positioning India as a global hub for cost-competitive green hydrogen and its derivatives. Ambani indicated that while the initial focus will be on meeting Reliance's own captive demand, the company plans to scale up to 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen equivalent production capacity by 2032.

Solar Manufacturing Platform Operations

Ambani announced that Reliance's solar PV manufacturing platform has become operational, producing its first 200 MW of heterojunction technology (HJT) modules. These modules deliver 10 percent higher energy yield, 20 percent better temperature performance, and 25 percent lower degradation compared to conventional alternatives.

The manufacturing platform will expand to 10 GWp per annum of integrated solar PV manufacturing capacity in the coming quarters and further to 20 GWp. This expansion will make it the largest solar manufacturing facility and the most integrated single-site solar complex globally.

Battery and Electrolyser Manufacturing Facilities

In parallel with the solar project, Reliance is constructing gigafactories for batteries and electrolyzers. The battery gigafactory is expected to begin operations in 2026 with an initial annual capacity of 40 GWh, expandable to 100 GWh. The electrolyser giga factory will start by end-2026 with a capacity of up to 3GW per year, enabling large-scale, cost-competitive green hydrogen production.

Ambani emphasized that the integrated solar, battery storage, and hydrogen ecosystem under one roof will provide scale, cost, and technology advantages, and supply chain resilience, creating long-term value as the global energy transition gathers pace.
