Prosolia Energy, an international Independent Power Producer, has announced the commissioning of a Battery Energy Storage System at its Albispark solar plant in Castelo Branco, Portugal, marking one of the largest battery storage installations currently operating in the country.
Project Scale and Grid Connection
The Albispark BESS delivers 15 MW of power output and 60 MWh of storage capacity, integrated into an existing 34.4 MWp photovoltaic facility at the same site.
The system is connected directly to the 150 kV high-voltage transmission grid, placing it among the most significant battery energy storage deployments in Portugal to date.
The combination of an operating solar plant with a newly commissioned storage system represents what Prosolia Energy describes as a hybridization model, bringing together generation and storage assets within a single facility.

The storage technology has been supplied by Trina Storage, a global provider of energy storage solutions. The company's systems are specifically designed for utility-scale applications and include advanced monitoring and energy management capabilities intended to optimize plant operations and the facility's interaction with the wider grid.
The integration of these monitoring tools is positioned as central to how the Albispark project will manage both energy dispatch and grid support functions on an ongoing basis.

The commissioning of Albispark comes at a time when Portugal's energy sector is placing growing emphasis on flexibility solutions to accommodate increasing volumes of renewable generation.

The Albispark project has been selected as a beneficiary of Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan under the C21 – REPowerEU programme. The programme is designed to strengthen grid flexibility and accelerate the integration of renewable energy sources across Portugal.
Albispark's inclusion in this funding mechanism reflects the project's alignment with national and European energy transition objectives, particularly around grid stability and the scaling of dispatchable renewable capacity.
A Strategic First for Prosolia Energy
Beyond its significance to Portugal's energy infrastructure, the Albispark project carries specific strategic importance for Prosolia Energy itself. The company has described it as its first international utility-scale hybridization project, representing the opening move in a broader international strategy to integrate battery storage across its renewable energy portfolio.
The company has indicated that the hybridization approach demonstrated at Albispark will be extended to additional utility-scale projects in Portugal. Two sites have been identified as the next steps in this expansion. The first is Santo Varão in Coimbra, where a 5.5 MW storage project is planned.
The second is Algeruz in Palmela, where an 8 MW system is under consideration. Both projects would follow the model established at Castelo Branco, pairing storage capacity with existing generation infrastructure.
