PowerX, Inc. has announced plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, as part of its strategy to expand renewable energy solutions in Japan. The upcoming plant, named "Power Base Hokkaido," will focus on producing large-scale battery storage systems and is expected to begin operations by June 2027.

The company plans to invest around 3.0 billion yen in the project. The new facility will manufacture the "Mega Power 2500," a containerized Battery Energy Storage System designed for grid-scale applications.

Production Capacity and Product Details

The Mega Power 2500 systems are built inside 10-foot containers and are aimed at supporting renewable energy integration, especially solar power. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce up to 800 units annually, with a total storage capacity of about 2 GWh.

This production will help meet the growing demand for energy storage solutions in regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku, which have strong potential for renewable energy development. Initially, the facility will operate with one production line, but it has been designed to support future expansion with an additional line if demand increases.

Strategic Location and Operational Benefits

PowerX's decision to establish a facility in Hokkaido is based on several important factors. One of the key reasons is to increase its overall production capacity to address the rising demand for grid stabilization technologies. The company also aims to reduce risks by spreading its manufacturing operations across different regions, instead of relying on a single location in Okayama Prefecture. This approach is particularly important in a country like Japan, where natural disasters can impact industrial operations.

The location of the new plant in Tomakomai offers logistical benefits as well. Being close to the Port of Tomakomai and New Chitose Airport will allow easy transportation of heavy equipment and finished products through both sea and air routes. This will improve supply chain efficiency and reduce delivery timelines.

Facility Development and Future Plans

The company plans to renovate an existing building rather than construct a new one, which will help save time and reduce environmental impact. The site covers over 25,000 square meters, including a large building area suitable for industrial operations. PowerX is also considering using the same facility to manufacture its upcoming product, the Scalable Modular Data Center. With this expansion, PowerX aims to support Japan's goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

The new facility is expected to play an important role in strengthening local energy systems and promoting the use of clean energy. The development also marks a significant step for the company as it moves towards becoming a multi-location manufacturer, diversifying its production capabilities beyond its current operations in Okayama Prefecture.
