OMV Petrom (integrated energy producer) and its partner Renovatio have obtained a USD 53.56 million investment loan from Banca Comercială Română to fund the construction of a wind energy project in Gura Văii, near Onești in Bacău county, Romania.
The financing covers at least 60% of the project's total value and marks a concrete step toward the company's broader target of exceeding 2.5 gigawatts of installed renewable capacity by 2030.
Project Scope and Financial Structure
The Gura Văii wind project has an installed capacity of approximately 50 megawatts and carries all necessary permits for construction. Its annual net power output is estimated at around 110 gigawatt-hours.
The loan from Banca Comercială Română, one of Romania's largest commercial lenders, will finance at least 60% of the total project cost, with the USD 53.56 million figure representing the full investment loan amount.
The project company responsible for the Gura Văii development is the vehicle through which the financing was secured. OMV Petrom describes itself as the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, and the Renovatio group holds an equal share in the joint structure that oversees this and other related developments.

Electrocentrale Borzești Portfolio
The Gura Văii project sits within the Electrocentrale Borzești portfolio, a collection of renewable energy developments with a combined capacity of approximately 1,000 megawatts.
OMV Petrom acquired a 50% stake in Electrocentrale Borzești in 2024, with Renovatio holding the remaining 50%. The portfolio spans solar, wind, and hydro projects across Romania.
OMV Petrom recently announced a final investment decision covering 300 megawatts of wind projects, of which the Gura Văii development forms a part. The announcement of the BCR loan represents the financial close necessary to move that particular project from development into active construction and eventual operation.

Broader Renewable Energy Strategy
Franck Neel, the member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board responsible for Gas and Power, framed the Gura Văii financing within the company's wider renewable energy ambitions.
"Our objective is to have over 2.5 GW of installed capacity in renewable energy projects by 2030, together with our partners. We have developed a diversified portfolio of solar, wind, and hydro projects. We are now entering a new phase, transforming these projects into production capacities: we already have 70 MW in operation and 1,500 MW under development. The Gura Văii - Onești project is an important step in strengthening our presence in renewable energy production in Romania," Neel said.
The figures cited by the executive indicate that OMV Petrom currently has 70 megawatts of renewable capacity in operation, with a further 1,500 megawatts at various stages of development. The company's stated 2030 target of more than 2.5 gigawatts is being pursued in collaboration with partners including Renovatio.
Activity Across the OMV Petrom Project Pipeline
The Gura Văii financing announcement follows a period of notable activity across OMV Petrom's project pipeline. In late June 2026, the company announced large-scale deliveries of solar panels for projects in Oltenia, and reported the delivery of all modules for a 20 megawatt green hydrogen project at its Petrobrazi refinery. OMV Petrom also moved its Gabare Solar Project into a development phase in June 2026, while commissioning a new aromatics unit at Petrobrazi the same month.
On its offshore gas operations, OMV Petrom announced in July 2026 that the offshore production platform for the Neptun Deep project had been installed in the Black Sea, following a separate announcement in May 2026 that pipelaying had commenced at the same Black Sea development.
Renewable Push in Romania
Romania's energy transition has attracted increasing investment from major regional producers, and OMV Petrom's activity through the Electrocentrale Borzești structure reflects the scale of that shift.
The approximately 1,000 megawatt portfolio that OMV Petrom and Renovatio are developing together spans multiple technology types and geographic locations within the country.
The Gura Văii project, located in Bacău county in northeastern Romania, adds wind generation capacity to a region where the Onești industrial complex, historically linked to petrochemical production, is now also becoming associated with renewable energy development.
With permitting complete and financing secured, the project is positioned to advance toward construction under the terms of the investment loan announced on July 27, 2026.
Powering Smarter Decisions Across Romania's Energy Landscape
With Romania's power sector undergoing one of its most ambitious transformations in decades, the margin for missed opportunities has never been narrower. Grid modernisation, offshore wind expansion, and cross-border interconnection programmes are generating a wave of project activity, and the organisations best positioned to benefit are those with the clearest view of what is coming next.
