OMV AG has made a final investment decision to construct an electrolysis facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria, with a capacity to produce up to 23,000 metric tons of green hydrogen per year. The 140-MW electrolyzer will utilize wind, solar, and hydro power and is expected to start production in 2027. This project will be the largest European electrolytic facility to produce renewable hydrogen.
Project Details
The facility will split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electricity, producing green hydrogen. OMV has already announced the start of production at its first commercial-scale green hydrogen facility, built with a capacity of 1,500 metric tons per annum at its Schwechat refinery near Vienna. This plant uses a 10-MW PEM electrolyzer powered by hydro, solar, and wind energy, avoiding up to 15,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Partnership and Future Plans
OMV has signed a letter of intent with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. PJSC (Masdar) to collaborate on producing green hydrogen and derivatives. The partnership aims to produce synthetic aviation fuel and other synthetic fuels, as well as synthetic chemicals, in Austria, the United Arab Emirates, and northern and central Europe. Martijn van Koten, OMV executive vice president for fuels and chemicals, stated that the project demonstrates how industrial innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Sustainability Efforts
The production of green hydrogen will help decarbonize the refinery and produce more sustainable fuels and chemicals, including sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. OMV has also put into operation a plant that uses its proprietary ReOil technology to convert hard-to-recycle plastics into virgin-quality products, strengthening the link between refining and chemical production. The company's efforts aim to unlock greater efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability, turning molecules into value and strategy into meaningful impact. With the construction of the new facility, OMV is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future.
