Octopus Energy Generation and ZE Energy Back 98.5 MW Battery Project in Southern Italy

Octopus Energy Generation (renewable energy investor) and ZE Energy (renewable energy producer) have announced a joint investment in one of Italy's largest battery storage projects, backing a 98.5 MW / 895 MWh facility in the Campania region that its developers say will become the largest standalone battery in south-central Italy once operational.

The Sessa Aurunca Project

The Sessa Aurunca project, located in Campania and developed by ZE Energy, is currently in its final stages of development. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with the facility expected to come online by 2028. When operational, the battery will have sufficient capacity to meet the daily electricity needs of around 130,000 Italian homes.

The site will connect to a substation serving multiple power producers, creating what the partners describe as a local energy hub. Its function is to absorb surplus electricity generated by wind and solar installations when conditions are favorable, and then discharge that power back to the grid during periods of higher demand.

The project has secured backing through Italy's MACSE tender scheme, administered by grid system operator Terna. Under the scheme, the Sessa Aurunca facility has been awarded a fixed 15-year contract and accounts for 42 percent of the capacity awarded in the region through that process.

 

Investment Structure and Fund Backing

Octopus Energy Generation's investment in the project has been made on behalf of the Sky fund, formally designated ORI SCSp, which the company manages. The deal represents the latest in a series of Italian investments made by Octopus Energy Generation's fund management team.

Octopus Energy Generation describes itself as one of Europe's largest specialist renewables investors, with a current portfolio of 4.9 gigawatts of green energy projects across 21 countries, valued at USD 9.39 billion. The company states that those assets generate enough green power for 3.2 million homes per year.

In Italy specifically, Octopus Energy Generation has built what it describes as a significant pipeline of projects through investments in developers working on more than 2 gigawatts of new battery storage sites, wind farms, solar farms, and rooftop solar installations for businesses.

ZE Energy's Strategic Position

For ZE Energy, the Campania deal represents a significant step in its Italian growth strategy. Founded in 2020 and currently active in France, Italy, and Germany, ZE Energy positions itself as a specialist in hybrid photovoltaic power plants combined with co-located or standalone battery energy storage systems.

 

The company develops, finances, builds, and operates renewable electricity generation and storage solutions, and also markets the energy produced either directly to consumers or through tender processes.

ZE Energy chief executive Nicolas Wolff said the partnership with Octopus Energy Generation would serve as an accelerator toward the company's goal of reaching 1.5 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2030. Wolff framed Italy's ambition to deploy 10 gigawatts of battery storage and 80 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity by 2030 as central to ZE Energy's planning.

 

"Our conviction is simple: solar will only be able to scale up if it is combined with storage solutions capable of better integrating it into the grid, making it more dispatchable and improving its value," he said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Italy's Clean Energy Targets

The deal comes as Italy pursues national targets to generate 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, supported by a target of 10 gigawatts of battery storage capacity across the country. The Sessa Aurunca project, securing 42 percent of the MACSE capacity awarded in its region, represents a meaningful contribution to that national buildout.

Alex Brierley, co-head of Octopus Energy Generation's fund management team, pointed to the economic as well as environmental case for battery storage investment. "Wind and solar are the cheapest form of energy, but too often this clean, cheap energy goes to waste," Brierley said. "Batteries fix that. They soak up every spare electron and release them when needed, cutting waste and bringing bills down for people."

Market Context

Italy's energy storage market has attracted increasing attention from European renewables investors as the country works to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and integrate higher volumes of intermittent generation.

 

The MACSE tender mechanism, through which the Sessa Aurunca project secured its long-term contract, is Italy's main policy instrument for incentivizing large-scale battery storage deployment. By awarding fixed-term revenue contracts to successful bidders, the scheme is designed to reduce investment risk and attract private capital into the sector.

The Campania project's connection to a shared substation infrastructure, which ZE Energy and Octopus describe as creating a local energy hub for multiple power producers, reflects a broader approach to integrating battery storage into existing grid infrastructure rather than building entirely standalone systems.
