Merus Power (technology company)has signed an agreement with wpd Söderskogen Vindpark Oy (Finnish project company) to deliver a 30 MW / 60 MWh battery energy storage system in Finland, marking the first energy storage project undertaken by the international wpd Group.

The deal, announced, covers the full delivery of the energy storage system, including installation, commissioning, and testing, along with an ongoing service and maintenance agreement. Commercial operation is scheduled for summer 2027.

wpd's First Step into Energy Storage

Wpd Söderskogen Vindpark Oy is a Finnish entity within the international wpd Group, which develops renewable energy projects globally. According to the announcement, this project represents wpd's first foray into energy storage, making the selection of a technology partner a consequential decision for the organization.

Merus Power was chosen based on its European technology, reliability, and its track record of delivering battery energy storage systems. The Finnish manufacturer's experience with demanding energy storage systems and grid-forming solutions that actively support power grid stability were cited as factors in the selection.

Mattias Järvinen, Head of Wind Project Development at wpd Suomi Oy, described energy storage facilities as an important component of renewable energy growth and the broader development of the power system.

He noted that such systems increase flexibility and enable more efficient utilization of wind and solar power. Järvinen indicated that the energy storage system will initially operate as a standalone solution for balancing the power grid. At a later stage, it may be used in conjunction with wind power production being developed in the same area.

Strategic Significance for Merus Power

For Merus Power, the agreement carries strategic weight on multiple fronts. Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power, described the deal as an important demonstration of confidence in the company's European technology, which is developed and manufactured in Finland.

He characterized wpd's decision to implement its first energy storage project using Merus Power's technology as a significant vote of confidence and said the contract strengthens the company's position in what he called the growing flexibility and storage market.

Tuomala also highlighted the service and maintenance component of the agreement as significant in its own right. He said the service contract supports the growth of Merus Power's service business and contributes to value creation throughout the full lifecycle of energy storage systems, pointing to a business model that extends beyond the initial equipment sale.

Finnish Manufacturing and In-House Technology Development

Merus Power develops the technology and software for its energy storage solutions internally and manufactures its products at a facility in Ylöjärvi, Finland. The company states that this approach strengthens supply chain management and that European manufacturing and software development support the secure implementation of critical infrastructure.

The announcement positions these characteristics as competitive differentiators, particularly relevant in the context of energy infrastructure security considerations.

The company describes its broader offering as combining energy storage, power quality solutions, smart control, and lifecycle services to improve flexibility, stability, energy efficiency, and security of supply in the electricity system.

Agreement Positioned Within a Broader Market Push

The deal with wpd Söderskogen Vindpark Oy follows closely on other recent announcements from Merus Power. Earlier in June 2026, the company announced a collaboration with CATL on battery energy storage in Northern Europe, and separately issued a statement describing its position among the winners of the energy transition. The wpd agreement adds to what appears to be a period of active commercial development for the Ylöjärvi-based firm.

The agreement also reinforces Merus Power's stated aim of establishing itself as a technology partner for international renewable energy operators, as the company expands its footprint beyond domestic projects into deals with globally active developers such as wpd.
