ECO STOR has secured financing for a 300 MW / 718 MWh battery energy storage system in Förderstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, marking the largest battery storage project ever financed in Germany. The announcement was made by the Munich-based developer alongside financing partners Banco Santander and NORD/LB.
Project Scale and Significance
The Förderstedt facility will deliver 300 megawatts of power capacity and 718 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, making it approximately three times larger than the current biggest battery storage installation in Germany.
That existing record-holder, located in Bollingstedt, was also built by ECO STOR and has been in operation for one year. The new Förderstedt project is scheduled to reach full commercial operations in 2027.
According to ECO STOR, the project is intended to add flexibility to the German electricity system at an industrial scale. The company says the storage asset will facilitate the integration of renewable energy, contribute to grid stabilisation, and strengthen long-term security of supply.
The project is financed entirely through private investment and commercial financing, without reliance on public subsidies, a point emphasised by ECO STOR's chief financial officer.

Commercial Framework and Revenue Structure
The financing is supported by a long-term Flexibility Tolling agreement with Next Kraftwerke, described as one of Europe's leading virtual power plant operators. The contract was announced separately ahead of the financing close and provides the commercial foundation underpinning the project's bankability.
Under the arrangement, Next Kraftwerke will optimise the battery asset across multiple energy and ancillary services markets. ECO STOR describes the structure as combining revenue planning certainty with operational flexibility. The company says this approach reflects the growing maturity of the large-scale battery storage market in Germany and Europe.

Lender and Advisor Perspectives
Bart White, Global Head of Energy Structured Finance at Santander CIB, said the bank was pleased to support the Förderstedt financing, describing battery storage systems as increasingly important to energy market transformation. White stated that supporting projects of this kind contributes to building a more flexible, reliable, and sustainable energy system.
Florian Hock, Senior Director at NORD/LB, said the expansion of the energy transition in Germany and Europe would depend significantly on large-scale battery storage projects, calling them critical for strengthening grid flexibility and energy security.
Hock added that the bank is committed to providing the capital and financial expertise needed to accelerate the path to net-zero emissions in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and across Europe.
Developer's Assessment of Market Maturity
Jörn Rohland, CFO of ECO STOR, said the successful financing of Förderstedt sends a strong signal to the market. He described the achievement as particularly noteworthy given that regulatory frameworks, market structures, and revenue models in the storage sector continue to evolve.
Rohland stated that projects like Förderstedt deliver more than additional storage capacity, characterising them as critical infrastructure that strengthens grid stability, integrates renewables efficiently, and increases security of supply.
He noted that this type of infrastructure is now being delivered through private investment alone, which he said demonstrates the market's growing ability to finance essential energy transition assets without public support.
Legal Advisors
Clifford Chance acted as legal counsel to the lenders, Banco Santander and NORD/LB, in connection with the transaction. Hogan Lovells served as legal advisor to ECO STOR.
Background on Financing Parties
Banco Santander, headquartered in Spain and founded in 1857, ranks among the world's largest banks by market capitalisation. The bank operates through five global business divisions, including Corporate and Investment Banking, through which the Förderstedt financing was structured.
As of the end of the first quarter of 2026, Banco Santander reported a total business volume of 1.4 trillion euros, serving more than 176 million customers and employing approximately 185,000 staff across 6,600 branches worldwide.
NORD/LB is a German regional bank that has established a presence in renewable energy and infrastructure project finance. ECO STOR is headquartered in Kirchheim bei München and has developed battery storage projects, including the Bollingstedt facility, which currently holds the record for Germany's largest operational battery storage system prior to the Förderstedt project reaching completion.
