The Government of Nova Scotia has granted environmental assessment approval to the Ocean Lake Wind Project in Guysborough County, marking a significant milestone in the province's clean energy transition. The approval was issued on July 2, and the project now stands as the largest wind energy development ever approved in Nova Scotia.

Scale and Energy Output

The Ocean Lake Wind Project will feature up to 158 turbines and is projected to generate approximately 1,264 megawatts of clean electricity once operational. Provincial authorities estimate that output will be sufficient to power the equivalent of about 404,000 homes.

 

The project is also expected to reduce Nova Scotia's annual greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 1.94 million tonnes, a reduction the province compares to removing approximately 420,000 gas-powered vehicles from the road each year.

The project is located near the communities of New Harbour, Goldboro, Larry's River, Lundy, and Roachvale in Guysborough County.

The Ocean Lake Wind Project is being developed jointly by EverWind NS Holdings Ltd. and Membertou Development Corp. The involvement of Membertou Development Corp., the business arm of the Membertou First Nation, marks a notable partnership between a commercial energy developer and an Indigenous community organization in one of the province's most consequential energy projects to date.

Construction Timeline and Employment

Construction of the wind farm is not expected to begin until 2029 and is anticipated to take approximately five years to complete. During the construction phase, the project is projected to create between 400 and 500 jobs.

 

Once the facility moves into its operational phase, an additional 40 to 50 permanent positions are expected to be filled to manage ongoing operations at the site.

Beyond direct employment, the Ocean Lake Wind Project carries significant fiscal implications for the local municipality. The project is expected to generate approximately USD 11 million in annual tax revenue for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.
