The 131.25 MW first phase of the Štip Wind Farm in North Macedonia has reached financial close, marking the most significant wind energy development in the country's history and representing a notable advance for renewable energy investment across Southeastern Europe.
A Landmark Project for North Macedonia
The Štip Wind Farm, developed by Alcazar Energy Partners, a leading independent infrastructure fund manager, is planned across three phases with a total capacity of up to 396 MW.
Once fully developed, the project is expected to more than quadruple North Macedonia's installed wind capacity, positioning it as a central pillar of the country's energy transition and supporting the country's shift away from coal-fired generation toward a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
The financial close of the project's first phase was announced on September 23, 2026, from Štip, North Macedonia, with global green technology company Envision Energy identified as the turbine supplier for the development.
The project will operate entirely on a private offtake basis, backed by a long-term offtake agreement with an investment-grade international corporation, a structure that project stakeholders say sets an important benchmark for commercially driven renewable energy investment in the region.
Envision Energy's Turbine Technology
Envision Energy is supplying 21 EN182-6.25 MW wind turbines for the first phase of the Štip project. Each turbine features a 120-metre hub height, and the EN182 model ranks among the largest onshore wind turbines deployed in Europe. The company says the turbine's scale supports higher energy yield and improves overall project efficiency.
Kane Xu, Senior Vice President and President of International Product Line at Envision Energy, described the project as bringing together proven wind technology, commercial scale, and long-term system value.
"Beyond adding new capacity, the project shows how advanced wind can strengthen energy resilience, improve system competitiveness and support broader economic transformation," Xu said.
"Through projects like Štip, Envision is helping shape the Future Energy System in the region, with renewable energy at the foundation of a more resilient and competitive energy economy."
The financial close of the Štip project marks what Envision Energy describes as an advance in its presence in the European wind market, reinforcing what it characterizes as the bankability of its technology in the region.

International Financing Institutions Validate Technology
The financial backing for the Štip Wind Farm's first phase comes from a consortium of prominent international institutions. Envision's wind technology has been accepted as bankable by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Finance Corporation, which is the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, and Erste Group Bank AG, described as Austria's largest banking group.
The involvement of these institutions is being highlighted by project stakeholders as evidence of the international standing of Envision's technology platform and its suitability as a partner for large-scale renewable energy investment across Europe.
The participation of the EBRD and IFC in particular signals a level of due diligence and institutional confidence that is expected to carry weight with other potential investors and developers looking at the Southeastern European market.
A Commercial Model for the Region
The structure of the Štip Wind Farm's financing and offtake arrangements is being presented as a template for how utility-scale renewable energy development can be advanced in Southeastern Europe without reliance on state-backed feed-in tariffs or government guarantees.
The project's entirely private offtake basis, supported by a long-term agreement with an investment-grade counterparty, demonstrates that commercially driven frameworks are capable of unlocking large-scale clean energy deployment in markets that have historically lagged behind Western Europe in wind development.
Daniel Lancha, Partner at Alcazar Energy Partners, said the project reflects his firm's long-term commitment to North Macedonia and confidence in the country's renewable energy potential.
"As the project moves into construction, we are proud to be turning this shared ambition into clean, affordable electricity, new jobs and lasting economic value for local communities," Lancha said. "Štip will also demonstrate what can be achieved through strong partnerships, setting an important benchmark for renewable energy development across the wider region."
Southeastern Europe's Expanding Wind Market
The Štip Wind Farm's advancement comes as Southeastern Europe is increasingly drawing the attention of renewable energy developers and international financial institutions seeking to support the energy transitions of countries in the Western Balkans and surrounding region.
North Macedonia, like many of its neighbors, has historically been dependent on coal for electricity generation, and the country faces the dual challenge of decarbonizing its power sector while ensuring energy security.
A project of Štip's eventual scale, at up to 396 MW across its three planned phases, would represent a transformative addition to North Macedonia's generation mix. The first phase alone, at 131.25 MW supplied by 21 large-capacity turbines, is already the largest wind energy project the country has seen.
For Envision Energy, the project adds to its footprint in Europe and extends its track record of deploying large-scale onshore wind technology in markets where it is competing for position alongside established European turbine manufacturers.
The company's ability to secure financing from the EBRD, IFC, and Erste Group for the Štip project is expected to strengthen its case in future procurement processes across the continent.
