NLC India Limited has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited, has emerged as the successful bidder for a 275 MW/550 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System project in Gujarat, marking a significant step in the state-run company's push into large-scale energy storage.

Regulatory Filing Confirms Award

NLC India Renewables Limited, referred to as NIRL, participated in a tariff-based competitive bidding process organized by
Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, the state power utility known as GUVNL.

Following the conclusion of that process, GUVNL issued a Letter of Intent to NIRL formally recognizing the subsidiary as the preferred developer for the project.

The filing was the basis for the announcement by NLC India Limited, a Navratna enterprise operating under the Ministry of Coal.

Project Scale and Structure

The awarded project involves the development of a standalone Battery Energy Storage System with a capacity of 275 MW and 550 MWh, to be located in the state of Gujarat.

The project is classified as standalone, meaning it operates independently rather than being co-located with a specific generation asset.

The tender was floated by GUVNL under tariff-based competitive bidding, a procurement mechanism that invites developers to compete on the tariff at which they will supply storage services.

NIRL participated in that process and was selected as the successful bidder before receiving the Letter of Intent from GUVNL.

Role in Gujarat's Power System

The project is expected to support the integration of renewable energy into Gujarat's power system. Battery energy storage systems store electricity and make it available when required, enabling power systems to manage variations in renewable generation from sources such as solar and wind.

The BESS facility is expected to contribute to improved grid stability and reliability, better management of fluctuations in renewable power output, and greater flexibility in power supply across the state.

Gujarat has been among the leading states in India in terms of installed renewable energy capacity, and large-scale battery storage projects are increasingly viewed as a necessary complement to that generation base.

NLC India's Broader Energy Storage and Renewables Strategy

The Gujarat BESS project forms part of NLC India Limited's broader strategy to expand its renewable energy and energy storage portfolio. The company, which has historically been associated with lignite mining and thermal power generation, has been increasing its focus on clean energy technologies as India accelerates its transition toward a more sustainable power sector.

NIRL, established as a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited, was set up specifically to develop the company's presence in the renewable energy sector.

The subsidiary is working toward developing clean energy projects and energy solutions in support of India's power transition goals.

The BESS win in Gujarat represents an expansion for NIRL beyond conventional renewable energy generation projects and into the energy storage segment.

The project adds a new dimension to the subsidiary's activities and strengthens its position in what the company has described as a rapidly expanding energy storage market.

Company Milestone

The project award coincides with NLC India marking 70 years of operations. The company described the Gujarat BESS win as an important milestone as it diversifies its energy portfolio and participates in emerging technologies supporting India's evolving power sector.

NLC India Renewables Limited's success in the GUVNL tender underscores the competitive positioning of the subsidiary in executing large-scale energy infrastructure projects.

Further details regarding project commencement and implementation timelines were not disclosed in the regulatory filing.
