Nexans and TenneT have marked the start of subsea cable production for the LanWin2 offshore grid connection project at Nexans' facility in Halden, Norway.

Announced on 16 October 2026, the milestone represents the first industrial-scale manufacturing of Nexans' 525 kV HVDC XLPE subsea cable technology and the beginning of the delivery phase for LanWin2, a project that will connect offshore wind generation in the German North Sea to Germany's transmission grid.

The start of manufacturing follows the successful qualification of the 525 kV HVDC XLPE cable technology and marks its transition from qualification and engineering to large-scale delivery under the long-term partnership between the two companies.

According to Nexans, the milestone also demonstrates the readiness of the company's next-generation HVDC cable system for large-scale deployment across Europe's energy transition projects.

Context within the TenneT partnership

LanWin2 is one of TenneT's major offshore grid connection systems, designed to integrate renewable energy from the North Sea into the German power grid. The project will use Nexans' 525 kV HVDC XLPE subsea cable technology, which the companies say enables the efficient transmission of large volumes of renewable electricity over long distances.

The frame agreement underpinning the work was established in 2023 as a long-term approach to secure supply chain capacity, provide planning certainty, and accelerate the delivery of transmission infrastructure needed for Europe's energy transition. The start of production is presented by both companies as evidence of the progress achieved under that strategic partnership.

Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President of PWR-Transmission at Nexans, described the development as the transition from qualification to full-scale manufacturing and delivery. "Starting industrial-scale production of our 525 kV HVDC XLPE subsea cable at industrial scale demonstrates the strength of our technology, our manufacturing capabilities, and our commitment to supporting Europe's energy transition," Radue said.

TenneT's perspective on the 2 GW programme

For TenneT, a leading European transmission system operator, the project represents another step toward realizing Germany's offshore wind ambitions and strengthening the reliability of the future energy system. Matthias Mensing, Head of Investment Projects Management & Support at TenneT, called the start of cable production an important milestone both for LanWin2 and for the company's 2 GW programme as a whole.

"Together with Nexans, we are moving from planning and qualification into industrial-scale delivery," Mensing said. "Long-term partnerships like this give us the supply-chain capacity and planning certainty we need to deliver the offshore grid infrastructure for Germany's energy transition."

Project schedule and related connections

The cables will be installed as part of the LanWin2 offshore grid connection project, which is expected to be commissioned in 2031. Beyond LanWin2, the production milestone is also cited as demonstrating the readiness of the 525 kV HVDC XLPE technology for other projects under the TenneT frame agreement, including BalWin3, where cable installation activities in the Wadden Sea and nearshore areas are planned for 2027.

Both the LanWin2 and BalWin3 projects remain on schedule, according to the companies, and are described as continuing to demonstrate the momentum of TenneT's large-scale offshore grid expansion programme.

Powering Up Your Pipeline: Stay Ahead of Germany's Energy Build-Out

What separates firms that win contracts from those that chase them? Timing. In Germany's rapidly transforming power sector, knowing which projects are moving, which tenders are opening, and which developers are awarding contracts months before the market does is a genuine competitive edge.

Manual research across dozens of national energy agencies, utility announcements, and regulatory filings simply doesn't scale. It's slow, inconsistent, and riddled with blind spots, especially across Germany's fragmented procurement landscape.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research consolidates Germany's entire power project lifecycle into a single, continuously updated database, giving you the intelligence to act first and act smart.
