The US Commerce Department will award Microchip Technology a USD 162 million grant to boost the production of semiconductors and microcontroller units.

The grants will enable Microchip to triple the production of mature-node semiconductor chips and microcontroller units at two US factories. The funds include a USD 90 million grant to expand a fabrication facility in Colorado and an additional USD 72 million for a USD 800 million expansion already underway at Microchip’s semiconductor factory in Gresham.

Congress approved the USD 52 billion CHIPS Act legislation in 2022, which served as the foundation for the grant.

With the assistance of these funds, Microchip Technology will triple the production of mature-node semiconductor chips and microcontroller units at two U.S. factories.

"These semiconductor chips are crucial for the U.S. automotive, commercial, industrial, defense, and aerospace industries," stated Lael Brainard, the White House National Economic Council director.
