Matrix Renewables has signed a full EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) agreement with Tesla for the design, construction, and commissioning of a 500 MW / 2-hour (1 GWh) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Eccles, Scotland. The announcement was made on December 22, 2025, marking Matrix Renewables' first standalone BESS project in the UK.

Project Scale and Strategic Importance

The project represents one of Matrix Renewables' largest energy storage developments in Europe and globally to date. The 500 MW capacity with 2-hour duration translates to 1 GWh of energy storage capability. The facility is strategically positioned along key transmission corridors between Scotland and England, designed to provide critical grid flexibility, enable greater renewable integration, and strengthen system resilience.

The project directly supports the UK's Net Zero 2050 target and Clean Power 2035 ambition. All planning conditions for the project have been discharged, and full consent has been secured to commence construction.

Company Leadership Perspectives

Sergio Arbeláez, Managing Director, Europe & Latam at Matrix Renewables, emphasized the project's significance in supporting the UK's energy transition. “We are delivering infrastructure at the scale required to support the UK's transition to a clean, secure, and resilient power system,” Arbeláez stated. “This installation demonstrates our ability to execute complex, utility-scale storage projects through strong partnerships and a long-term strategic vision.”

Mike Snyder, Energy Vice President at Tesla, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are excited to support Matrix Renewables with their entry into the UK, bringing Tesla's track record in the market together with Matrix Renewables' expertise and vision. We highly value the partnership with their team and look forward to executing this landmark project together,” Snyder said.
