LG Energy Solution’s $5.5 Billion Battery Manufacturing Complex in Arizona Nears Completion

Last Updated on 04th April 2024

LG Energy Solution, a leading player in the global lithium-ion battery market, is making significant strides in Arizona's USD 5.5 billion stand-alone battery manufacturing complex project. The construction of this major complex, announced last year, is well underway and is expected to be completed in about two years. When fully operational, the complex’s average annual production capacity is expected to reach 53 GWh (cylindrical batteries: 36 GWh, LFP ESS batteries: 17 GWh).

The complex, located near the town of Queen Creek, consists of two manufacturing facilities, marking the company's first stand-alone cylindrical and BESS battery plants in North America. The cylindrical battery plant, known as LG Energy Solution Arizona, will produce 46-series batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). These batteries are a crucial part of the company's innovative product portfolio and demonstrate LG Energy Solution's advanced technological leadership throughout various applications for EVs.

Once the construction is complete, both facilities are expected to start production in 2026.  Furthermore, the company will also commit to hiring and fostering the next-generation battery professionals in the area, creating several thousand new quality jobs.

The company plans to start mass production of 46-Series batteries at its Ochang plant in Korea in the second half of this year, the earliest among major global battery manufacturers. LG Energy Solution Arizona is expected to continue the momentum and reinforce its manufacturing capability.

The company recently invited the Arizona state government and local community officials for a construction progress update on its second U.S. stand-alone facility. The attendees included Brian Oh, Head of Mobility & IT Battery Division at LG Energy Solution; Hyung Kim, Head of ESS Battery Division at LG Energy Solution; Richard Ra, President of LG Energy Solution Arizona; Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona; Sandra Watson, President and CEO of Arizona Commerce Authority; Mike Goodman, Supervisor and Chairman of Pinal County; Julia Wheatley, Mayor of Queen Creek, and other members of the state government and local community officials.

The ESS battery manufacturing facility, called LG Energy Solution Arizona ESS, will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch-type batteries for energy storage systems (ESS). It is one of the first ESS-exclusive battery factories in the world.

By situating its stand-alone ESS battery facility in North America, which plays a crucial role in the global ESS market, LG Energy Solution aims for a timely response to the fast-growing needs for locally manufactured batteries on the back of U.S. clean energy policies, providing ESS batteries with enhanced competitiveness in cost, battery life, and safety.
