Seven major multinational companies have formed an international coalition to support the development and use of e-natural gas (e-NG), a synthetic natural gas produced from renewable hydrogen and CO2. The coalition includes TotalEnergies, Engie, Mitsubishi Corporation, Osaka Gas, Sempra Infrastructure, Tree Energy Solutions (TES), Tokyo Gas, and Toho Gas.

The e-NG Coalition is a collaborative alliance of pioneering companies committed to accelerating the energy transition towards a net-zero carbon future. It aims to promote e-NG, establish global market standards for emissions accounting and certification, and enhance cooperation among all stakeholders along the e-NG value chain.

E-NG can be transported or liquefied and then sold like natural gas, using existing infrastructure. This makes it an attractive synthetic fuel for supporting decarbonization efforts, as end-users can incorporate it into their operations without requiring modifications.

TotalEnergies is currently studying the "Live Oak e-NG" project with Tree Energy Solutions (TES) to produce 100,000 to 200,000 tons of e-NG per year in the United States by 2030. The coalition expects to benefit from TotalEnergies' expertise in renewable power generation, large-scale project management, gas liquefaction, and green hydrogen project development gained through this project. The objective of the Coalition

The coalition aims to:

  • To promote the use of e-NG and support the emergence of a global market
  • To foster adequate support by policymakers and harmonization of applicable regulations and standards
  • To bolster collaboration between the various stakeholders along the entire value chain and across all geographies.

What is e-NG?

e-NG, or electric natural gas, is a game-changer in the quest for a sustainable future. By combining green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide (CO2), it is a synthetic methane gas. This green gas offers a clean alternative to traditional fossil-based natural gas, paving the way for significant emission reductions across various industries.

Green hydrogen, created by splitting water molecules using renewable electricity sources like solar or wind power, serves as the basis of e-NG. This electrolysis process releases only clean oxygen, making it an environmentally friendly way to generate hydrogen.
