India plans to increase its liquefied natural gas import capacity by 27% to reach 66.7 million metric tons per year by 2030, according to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri. The minister announced this expansion plan in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, stating that the country will be adding two more terminals to achieve this capacity increase.

Current LNG Infrastructure and Global Standing

India currently operates as the world's fourth-largest gas importer, with eight LNG terminals that have a combined capacity of 52.7 million tons per year. The planned expansion will add two new terminals to this existing infrastructure, representing a significant boost to the country's gas import capabilities.

Energy Mix Transformation Goals

The LNG capacity expansion is part of India's broader energy strategy to increase the share of gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030, up from approximately 6% at present. This shift is aimed at reducing the country's carbon footprint as part of its environmental commitments. India has established a net-zero goal for 2070, making the transition to cleaner energy sources a key policy priority.

Vehicle LNG Dispensing Station Expansion

Alongside the import capacity increase, India is significantly expanding its LNG dispensing infrastructure for vehicles. Minister Puri announced that the country will have 49 additional LNG dispensing stations operational by December, adding to the 13 stations currently in operation. This expansion is part of a larger plan to establish 1,000 LNG dispensing stations for vehicles across the country.

The infrastructure development represents a comprehensive approach to expanding natural gas usage in India's transportation sector, supporting the country's broader goals of diversifying its energy sources and reducing emissions from the transport industry.
