India Launches First 'Make In India' Green Hydrogen Plant At Kandla Port In Gujarat

Updated on Aug 04, 2025, 04:00 AM IST

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has commissioned India's first 'Make in India' green hydrogen plant at Kandla, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in the country's journey toward maritime decarbonization and green energy adoption. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 1MW facility, which represents a historic move towards clean energy and sustainable development.

First Green Hydrogen Facility at Indian Port

The plant, constructed in just four months, marks the first phase of a planned 10MW green hydrogen facility. This project represents the first such initiative at any Indian port, reflecting India's growing commitment to sustainable and renewable energy solutions. The electrolyzer used in the project is indigenously manufactured, making the entire initiative an achievement under the Make in India campaign.

Initial Operations and Clean Mobility Applications

Initially, the plant will supply green hydrogen to power 11 buses and street lighting within the port premises. The DPA plans to expand its use over time to fuel all port operations, including vehicles, tugs, and vessels. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the port's carbon footprint, making it a model for other Indian ports to follow.

Expansion Timeline and Production Capacity

The project will expand rapidly according to the established timeline. Another 5MW of capacity is set to be added by the end of this fiscal year, while the full 10MW facility is targeted to become operational by the middle of the next fiscal year. Once completed, the plant will be capable of producing around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Maritime Decarbonization and Government Support

In its statement, the Deendayal Port Authority emphasized that the project is a pivotal step in maritime decarbonization. The initiative strengthens India's position as a global leader in sustainable port operations. Green hydrogen, known as the fuel of the future, can be used in power plants, vehicles, ships, and industrial applications, making it a versatile and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. The project has been characterized as a "new benchmark" in green energy execution, with praise for the DPA for demonstrating speed, scale, and skill. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the plant on May 26, 2025, during his visit to Bhuj, signaling the government's strong push for renewable energy innovation.
