Iberdrola (a Spanish multinational electric utility company) has inaugurated the Fénix solar photovoltaic plant in Sicily, marking the Spanish energy company's largest solar installation in Italy to date.
The 243 MW facility is already operational and produces nearly 400,000 MWh of electricity annually, a volume sufficient to cover the equivalent consumption of more than 140,000 homes.
Location and Scale
The Fénix plant is situated between the municipalities of Centuripe, Paternò, and Belpasso, spanning the provinces of Enna and Catania in Sicily. The site houses more than 413,000 bifacial photovoltaic modules and is connected to the national electricity system through 26 kilometres of medium voltage lines and a further 9 kilometres of high voltage lines. At the height of construction, more than 500 professionals were employed on the project.

Power Purchase Agreements Underpin the Project
A significant portion of the plant's output is committed through long-term power purchase agreements with leading Italian companies. Iberdrola has described these contracts as covering most of the facility's production.
The arrangements are intended to stabilise energy costs for industrial customers, guarantee security of supply, and support the broader competitiveness of Italy's productive sector.
The use of PPAs positions Fénix as a direct contributor to the electrification of the country's industrial base rather than simply feeding electricity into the open market.

Strategic Importance for Iberdrola in Italy
Iberdrola has framed Fénix as a milestone in its growth strategy within Italy. The company stated that the plant contributes to a cleaner, more self-sufficient, and sustainable energy model while also supporting job creation and community well-being.
The facility reinforces Italy's domestic clean generation capacity by producing electricity from an indigenous renewable source, reducing reliance on imported fuels.
Opening Ceremony Draws Senior Figures
The inauguration ceremony brought together senior executives and diplomatic representatives. Hugh Elliott, executive president of Iberdrola Energía Internacional, and Valerio Faccenda, country manager of Iberdrola Italia, both attended.
Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, the Spanish ambassador to Italy, was also present alongside regional and municipal authorities. The ceremony took place on 25 June 2026.
Powering Smarter Decisions Across Italy's Power Sector
Every major shift in Italy's Power landscape, from grid modernisation to renewable energy expansion, begins long before a shovel hits the ground. The organisations that win work, forge partnerships, and allocate resources effectively are those tracking projects from inception, not announcement.
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research gives Power professionals a structured, continuously updated view of infrastructure activity spanning power generation, water treatment, transmission networks, and beyond. Whether you are monitoring regulatory-driven upgrades or identifying emerging opportunities in underserved markets across Italy, the platform delivers the intelligence you need at every stage of a project's lifecycle.
Competing in Italy's Power sector demands more than periodic market reports. It requires a living, reliable dataset that reflects how projects are actually moving, from early planning through to completion.
